Beautiful spot by the lake, very peaceful and tranquil. Free campground so that’s always nice. Good long drop. Highly recommend. Bring the mosquito repellent.

Beautiful place, clean toilet, plenty of room, we stayed in tent. We were lucky enough having quiet and polite people around (considering we’ve been there during school holidays). If you are going on summer, it’s good to have a inflatable boat or a kayak, etc. Can’t wait to come back.

Beautiful simplicity, quiet and peaceful. Long drops and no facilities to mention, balanced out by wonderful views and no cost. It is a fair drive from the main road (about 25 min), but a good option nonetheless.

Gravel Road to campsite was longer than expected
Campsite was beautiful, right next to the lake and mountains, with friendly birdlife all around

Great location with amazing views. Very cozy place between the trees. Great sunrise and very quiet area. Nice and clean drop loo. Just after 5pm many sunflies...but what can you do? In general great place to stay at!

Really quiet and remote - we were the only ones there which was a bit eerie but ultimately lovely.
Unsealed track past the Lodge. Beautiful views over Lake Ohau and mountains, if you want peace and quiet this is your place.
2 long drops both fairly clean.

Very beautiful BUT the sandflies and the wind are horrific at times. The camping area is great if you are still willing. Not allowed to camp anywhere else along the lakeside unless you have a selfcontainment sticker, except the other Doc site.

One of our best freedom sites during our trip - but check your arrival time! It‘s pretty hard to find the way in the darkness.
Heaps of sandflies but so much worth it!
Have a swim in the lake, wake up right next to the waterfront with a beautiful sunrise and the overwhelming view - what else would you need?

Would be a 10 if not for the sandflies! They were everywhere!! We had to stayed at the van. But for the rest great place! In the middle of nowhere just next to the lake. Great star gazing, long drop toilet. Some dirty road until arrive but easy and accessible. Totally worth the detour!!

An absolutely stunning spot with unspoilt views of Lake Ohau and the mountains beyond. This is New Zealand at its best. Wild and beautiful. We’re here in winter and no other tourists in sight. Will be back for sure. Best of all it’s free.

Beautiful spot with donations welcome. We were in the camper there for the night and it was amazing.

Heaps of sandflies! But beautiful place, the lake surrounded by the mountains in the middle of nowhere is just stunning! No water supply, so bring your own! Clean toilets and all of that just for a donation!
Thanks to all the good people working for the NZ Department of Conservation - for all your hard work - making NZ more beautiful, accessable and healthy! Cheers 😍
