A perfect place to start or finish your New Zealand adventure. Peaceful riverside setting. Free wifi and advice for your travel plans. Hot showers available. Rustic, 'cool as' Eco camp with powered sites at the gateway to Banks Peninsula.

Only 45 minutes from Christchurch and 45 minutes from Akaroa. Nestled in the secluded picturesque Okuti Valley with private native bush reserve to explore plus slippery slides, giant swing and in-ground trampoline. Riverside park like setting with free hot showers, sheltered kitchen area - sinks, fridge, microwave, gas hobs, jug and toaster. Be adventurous, get off the beaten tourist track and discover our piece of paradise.

We aim to be an eco campground- the toilets are dry eco, Clivus Multrum, so don't expect air hand driers. We have good recycling and composting facilities. If you enjoy native bush, birds, views and want to see some nature we are a perfect place to stay. If you are wanting a holiday park chain you may like to stay somewhere else. Cabins are retro kiwi bach style with no bathrooms and rustic.

If you come here for the great outdoors over quality facilities we hope you'll rank us favourably.

Drum festival happening 24/25 February 2018.

Friendly, quiet, ethical, clean, facilities exactly as described, use it, enjoy it! Our first NZ campsite, straight off the plane from Wales. Marcus and Megan are exemplars of Kiwi hospitality and set a high standard. Arriving on a busy Canterbury holiday weekend and they found us a small secluded campervan plot all on its own!
Lots of wild, freedom camping planned, but I feel sorry for the next campsite we stay on as we’re now expecting a lot for the rest of the trip thanks to Marcus and Megan's hospitality!

Very nice campground and friendly owners. Very relaxed vibe! There is a nice kitchen area. The toilets are eco and very clean. At the time we were there, they were building new showers. We stayed for 3 nights, good spot to explore the peninsula. Its $ 35,- for a powered site and 2 persons. Good value for money.

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Hi Hester and Mark,
Thanks for your positive feedback on line and when you were here. I'm pleased you enjoyed the campground and vibe. Relaxed is what being on holiday should be all about! All the best and safe travels. Kind regards Marcus and Megan

This is hands down our favorite place to camp in the whole world!!! Little River Campground is so dreamy. The owners are laid back, helpful and friendly. The campsites are spacious and the amenities are more than adequate. There is a kitchen area, which is outdoors and covered, and there is a refrigerator for your perishable foods. There are warm showers and nice toilets with sinks outside. There are plenty of trails to tramp on, and tons of fun things to find along the way (like swings!! And slides!! And a tiny village hidden in the forest!!). There are also hundreds of bellbirds to be heard and seen- their morning song is such a lovely way to wake up and in the evenings, they provide the soundtrack to your dinner!! There really is a little river running through the property where you can see (and feed) huge eels. We've been back a couple times and plan to return any time we're back in NZ. It is absolutely perfect. Not posh or pretentious, just what you need and a little extra comfort. Please, go stay at Little River!!! Unless you have something against gorgeous scenery in a friendly environment, you'll love it here. Go check it out!!!!

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Hi Adam and Carlin,
Thanks for your wonderful description of our little campground. "Not posh or pretentious" sums us up well and I may even use that term in our marketing (if I may) so people know what to expect. We hope you made it home safely and you are welcome back anytime. Cheers, Marcus and Megan.

As the weather for our week of caravanning was looking dismal everywhere but Canterbury and the Banks Peninsula, we opted to revisit our old favourite knowing we would get the peace and tranquility, plus quirky character, that we love best. Having visited at least once a summer for the past few years, we still find new things to see and do at Little River Campground - some are new additions but it seems there is always more to discover here and in the surrounds. This time we encountered the intriguing Chinatown movie set hidden onsite in the forest, a drum kit in a shed and the new Big Swing - good for the adrenaline junkies out there! We also explored the neighbouring Department of Conservation Reserve, which was a beautiful native forest track (is that a King Fern we saw in there?), and used the campground as a great base to visit Birdlings Flat Crystal & Fossil Museum and then the Hilltop Tavern for tea. We learned there is a 2 hour forest walk that goes from the Hilltop right down to the Campground and observed the building of a brand new shower block onsite, both of which we are keen to make use of next time we visit. The camp playground has more jungle gyms and kids bikes too. This place has so much quirky, retro and recycled character - a little slice of old New Zealand, complete with native forest and birds and crazy kids activities - it takes us back to our own camping and bach holidays as kids. We really love the little details too - pretty flowers in vases and beautiful art everywhere, fresh cotton handtowels rather than wasteful paper napkins and super-friendly service from the hosts. This is the perfect place to go if you want a no-stress, kiwiana-inspired camping holiday. For quiet there is always a private nook to find in the forest or along the bubbling Okuti river, and for social times the big semi-outdoor kitchen makes mealtimes extra merry. Thanks for having us Marcus and Megan - we can't wait to visit again!

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Hi Teresa, Thanks for taking the time to write such a apt description of the camp and surrounds. If I didn't love here already, I'd visit (ha ha). See you again and have a great summer, Marcus and Megan.

We were very surprised when we arrived here after seeing so many good reviews. It looked incredibly run down, not a particularly scenic area either. Outside kitchen with old furniture in it. All in all not a nice place. Maybe if you are a bit of a hippy it could be appreciated.

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Hello Amy,

I too am surprised that you gave us a 3/10 rating. We state clearly we are a back to basics camp. 'If you enjoy native bush, birds, views and want to see some nature we are a perfect place to stay. If you are wanting a holiday park chain you may like to stay somewhere else.If you come here for the great outdoors over quality facilities we hope you'll rank us favourably.'
We have plenty of great comments about our camp being the best people have stayed at. It is more the surrounding bush than the facilities. Did you go and explore the bush walks, check out the views from the hills and wander through ancient forest we have? We don't force people to stay and it is not for everyone. We are not a Top Ten and strive to reuse and recycle material for the camp. Better luck next time with your choice of places to stay. Sorry to disappoint you but there is no need to give us 3 when it clearly states what we offer. Kind regards Marcus

Peaceful, tranquil, welcoming - what a wonderful place to be for our last night in New Zealand. It's hard to believe you are so close to Christchurch and well worth the drive. Thanks to our hosts for offering such a great place to enjoy, including woods to walk in with lots of birds to watch. Love the compost loos!

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Thank you for the positive review. It really helps people to understand what we offer and what to expect (or it should eh?). Kind regards Marcus

What a heavenly spot! Very peaceful, full of bird song. Delightful facilities. Beautiful place and walks direct from the site. Excellent eco facilities and charming owner. It was our last proper night in NZ, and the perfect end to our trip. Loved it!

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Thanks for your kind review Liz. I'm pleased that you enjoyed your stay and we also think it is the perfect place to 'say good bye' to NZ. (or hello). Close to the city but in nature, away from traffic and noise of the city. All the best with your future travel adventures and maybe we'll see you again. Marcus and Megan.

Beautiful place done with a lot of care and love. Unique. The owners, Marcus and Megan are great. It is not too far from the main road and still quiet and peaceful. Great facilities and amazing place for kids.

Rapidly becoming a stalwart on the summer camping/chill holiday experience for our wee family - Little River Camp Ground is set within stunning native bush complete with a chattering river running through it. Visiting at 'peak' season the experience was relaxed and easy-going (special mention to the kitchen/lounge facilities which perfectly combine food preparation and meeting new people) and suited a pair of adults and a six-year-old. From exploring magical forest trails, getting scared on the BIG swing, listening to the birds and reading books while keeping an eye on kids playing until sunset - this place has something for everyone.
Eco-philosophy definitely a bonus.
Carefully situated off the main road and catering to folk looking for something outside of the big motor parks. With generous and knowledgeable hosts, this spot is a rare treat indeed!

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Cheers Jesse, I hope you enjoyed your recent stay at the campground, even if it was a very busy weekend.

Little River Campground is a small cosy eco-holiday park. Take note there is no dump station available here. Only shower, toilets & kitchen. Powered sites only supply power no water point (unlike powered site of some holiday park). The park is rather far away from the main road.
The Manaia Native Habitat is just across a small river. If you have some time to kill in the day, you may want to explore it.

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Hi Singapore Sling,
Thanks for your review of our campground. We were disappointed you only scored us 5/10 though. We thought being off the main road is a positive, as there is less noise and traffic and pollution. We also state we have no dump station, as we are an eco campground we compost waste, but can not allow any chemicals from campervans in it. We also highly recommend a walk through our native habitat as this is why we live here, and it is very rare in this part of NZ. Check out is at 12, so everyone should have plenty of time to explore. Thanks Marcus and Megan.

This was our favourite campsite of our whole two month trip! We loved everything about it, the lovely grassy camping spots, the outdoor kitchen, the couches and beanbags, the compost toilets. The woodland walks were lovely with lots of quirky little touches. And whatever you do make sure you go on the swing up in the woods, it's a magical experience.

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Hi Sarah,

Wow, thanks for the favourable review. It makes us happy to share our 'little piece of paradise' with travellers who get what we're about. Back to basics but set in a nice little spot, classic kiwi old school camping. You're welcome back anytime and we wish you many more magical holiday experiences.

Hidden gem in the beautiful Okuti valley, just had a lovely birthday weekend with our now 6 year old at this wonderful campground. Great host Marcus who was very helpful & friendly, really enjoyed the bush walks, birdsong & relaxed atmosphere. Toilets & showers were clean, outdoor kitchen is good & there was a lovely children's playground. Will definitely come back as it was so enjoyable, cooking marshmallows on the camp fire next to the river was an awesome way to spend a Saturday night.

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Hello Duncan and Helen,

Thanks for the kind words about your stay here and you are coming back the weekend of 5/6 December, so you must have enjoyed it. Your feedback is valued. See you soon.
