The Barn Cabins & Camping

At the start of The Abel Tasman we have a great range of private cabins, modern dorm rooms and spectacular powered and non-powered camp sites.

Located right at the start of the Abel Tasman you have a great range of accommodation options; including private cabins, modern clean dorms and spectacular camping sites (power and non-powered).

The Barn is ready to provide everything for you to come and enjoy onsite with large outdoor decking, multiple BBQ areas, great sea views, plenty of seating and a great range of modern accommodation and facilities -even the showers have sea views! We also have movie and reading rooms so there is space to unwind.

On the cooler evenings we have roaring fires both indoor and out – to set the ambience for star gazing our clear and amazing night skies, and to keep you warm and cosy while indoors.

You can relax in our movie room while doing some much-needed laundry, with local indoor yoga close by and onsite massage to help you rest and recuperate on those rainy days!

We also aim to help you make the best decisions about the awesome things to do in the area. We organise water taxis, kayaking, sailing trips into the park as well as guided walking tours, seal/penguin watching, canyoning, caving, sky diving and more. We will organise transport for you, so you can be picked up from The Barn!

It is a fantastic site right at the base of the Abel Tasman foothills!

  • We loved The Barn.

Cosy kitchen and dining areas with the fires going.

It is fairly basic but has everything you need is the way of amenities and the room was easy to heat. Coffee machine in the office!

Nice roomy and clean showers and loos.

If the units had a wee porch/ eaves to dry your gear it would have been brilliant.

Happy staff and a reasonable rate.

  • Great spot right on the Abel Tasman and therefore also on the beach.

We had a pitch with a direct view of the sea.

Toilets and showers very clean. Showers can be used for unlimited purposes and are very large. Extensive opportunities for recycling, washing and drying clothes.

But quite expensive for a non-powered pitch.

On both days we met really nice staff.

  • Nice spot by the beach, very touristy location.

It was the most expensive camping place we've been to. Important to say is that there is no dump station, they say because they're off the grid but for the price you're paying it would be nice if it's included.

Staff is very friendly and helpful in organising your trips and excursions.

  • $54 for 2 pax for a powered site.

Free hot showers and clean toilets. Hair dryer even provided. However, please note the toilets and showers have motion sensors that turn off the lights if they don’t detect motions large enough. Cosy and well equipped kitchen and movie room with board games. There were quite a few groups when we stayed and it was homely. There’s also an outdoor grill and table tennis area. Reception sells some essential supplies as well. We extended our stay one more night :)

  • What a lovely place to say!

Soacious facilities, friendly staff and fantastic location right at the start of the track, by the beach and near a great restaurant (Park Cafe).

Our site wasn't very flat so we had to manouevre our campervan to be able to have a better night's sleep.

  • Enjoyed our stay here.

Spacious relaxed site with lots of little extras like table tennis, decking area, yoga. During our stay there was no yoga or food lorry but we soon got over that when we realised it is THE start of the coastal trail and instead of getting the bigger water taxis we could get a small one from 15 minutes up the road with a quirk's ‘boat ride’ tows by a tractor to the slipway. Lots of reviews spare the showers but they are excellent, spacious bathrooms with hot powerful showers. It may have just been us but we failed to find our way to the beach directly from the site as it seemed permanently cut off by channels of water left by the tide but there is access about 15/20 minutes walk away and we preferred the quiet beach to Kaiteriteri. At the start/end of the trail is a great bar/restaurant with beautiful views and good food choices. Note no dump at this site and water is not potable but shop sells water if you are not prepared.

  • Absolute egregious price for what it has.

Yes the amenities were nice in comparison to some sites, but not $45 per person nice. And that is for an unpowered spot on the grass. 45… We had better campsites for several dollars less than half of that. I understand that it’s one of few sites in the area so they can and will charge a bit more, but we have not encountered any place even close to $45 pp per night in the entire South Island

  • The must stay place in Marahau.

Right at the start of the AT great walk. We stayed here two nights before we did the walk. $28 for 2 people for a site per night so great value at $14 pp. Really good free hot showers. Laundry is $4 was and $4 dry. You can safely park your car there for $5 per day while you are doing the walk. The reception sells organic meat and eggs form their farm, as well as beer, local wine and other essential foods. The staff were very friendly. The common area is well stocked with pots pans and utensils and has oven, gas stoves, microwave, lots of fridges etc. This was my second time staying here as so good. The first time we stayed in a cabin which was also lovely.

  • Great spot to stay and walk the track.

We camped 2 nights and hiked the track from the campsite out to Onetahuti getting the water taxi back to Marahau at the the end of the day. Awesome facilities. Clean showers with a view of the ocean. You can buy food from the reception and they also sell meat from the farm and free range eggs.

  • Big disappointment, actually.

Bathrooms were OK showers weren't very clean and there was nowhere to place your clothes, and got frozen every time someone else started their shower. Kitchens were OK but nothing above average. The price was an outrageous $30 per person for a non powered site - WAY overpriced. Most expensive shower I've ever had 😬

  • Planned on staying one night here but liked it and the location so much we extended to two nights.

Stayed on the east side in spot 43 which backed up to some cow pasture and the ocean beyond that. Less than a 5 minute walk to the park trailhead and cafe (which has great pizza and drinks). Showers and bathrooms were very nice and never had to wait more than a minute or two for one to open up. Laundry was a little difficult because one dryer was out of service and people kept beating us to it. Overall had an awesome stay and looking forward to coming back!

  • Our best stay in our 4 weeks across nz.

We really felt at home here. We had an unpowered site that was spacious directly at the edge of the park. Situated at the park entrance you can start your walk into the park directly from there. They sold their own meat what was a nice surprise. They arranged us water taxi. Camp was full but atmosphere was great. Great holiday feeling!!!
