  • Loved our stay here, 2 adults and 3 young kids.

Cathy, the camp manager, was lovely. As it was off-season she said that as a self-contained vehicle we could use the shower and toilets. In peak season, self-contained vehicles need to use their own amenities which makes sense due to the size of the campground. For the shower, just get undressed and wrap in your towel, then pop a $2 coin in and walk just a few metres back into the shower. You’ll still get 1:30-1:45 minutes of a lovely warm shower. Beach when we were there was nice to look at, but not suitable for swimming due to dumping waves and rips.

  • We had such a lovely stay at the Matatā DOC Campsite.

We visited mid-November during a quiet period and stayed on site 56, all the way in the back corner. Lots of privacy and it almost felt like we had our own private beach access. The beach itself is beautiful with stunning sunsets, and the whole place felt very relaxing with all the pukekos and bunnies around.

We’re self-contained so we mainly used our own toilet and shower. The lady in the office was very friendly and told us we were welcome to use the facilities if we wanted. We used the toilet once — basic but flushing, totally fine for a DOC campsite. We used one DOC Pass and paid for one adult, which came to $18 per night.

I don’t really understand the negative reviews. It’s a basic DOC campsite — don’t expect anything fancy. You can’t compare it to a full-service campground where you’d pay around $60 per night for big facilities, a dump station, and electricity. If that’s what you’re after, this is not the place. But if you’re looking for a peaceful, simple, nature-filled stay, this campsite is perfect.

  • Very old, dirty toilets, shower looked 50 years old, not tried.

No electric, no dump station, pricey weeds meant walking barefoot not possible.

Pukekhos all over. $38 for 2 in a camper. For what?

  • After making a booking I received a Confirmation email telling me that users of Certified vehicles are not permitted to use the ablutions at Matata.

I had thought the maintenance/upgrade issues around the facilities there must be complete (previous reviews were a couple of years old) but it seems this site is possibly best avoided until upgrades are complete. Maybe phone/email before booking. I will be going elsewhere.

  • Great DOC camping, surrounded by nature, with a unique location between Matatā's wetlands and the beach, from where you can enjoy everyday a unique view over the Moutohora and the Whakaari islands

    .

The establishment provides all the basic amenities needed (drinkable water, hot shower, clean bathrooms, some camping tables on the field, etc...) except electricity where to charge your devices, what makes it perfect for backpackers visiting the Bay of Plenty and looking for a rest on their route.

Big plus: the camping manager, Pipa, is a very friendly people that will always help you with its best attitude.

  • One of the best campsites we’ve stayed at so far!

Very organised and family run. Lovely personable hosts, clean facilities and a great small town vibe. Fab fish and chip shop (Aunties) over the road, and coffee from Drift coffee is a MUST!

  • Met the ranger when we arrived.

I liked this place, was neat, had toilet’s, but the shower was bizarre. Had to to put the coin it outside then run around to get in for your 2 mins. But that gave it some character. Secure enough and far enough away from the road.

  • The manager on site was so lovely & helpful.

    Winter review:

Here in the heart of winter (July)

Gorgeous spot by the wild ocean

Despite wild wind, the area was very protected

Our campervan had road tires that easily bogged but, despite the downpour of rain, the grass was firm & we were bog free

Basic amenities (flush toilets and a hot shower for $1)

Booking online via Docs is a must

    Absolutely loved it.

  • This campsite was quite an odd experience.

The shower situation, in particular, is a major disappointment and feels like a scam. There’s only one shower available for up to 300 people, and it comes with a frustrating catch: you’re only allowed to use it for two minutes. To make matters worse, you have to leave the shower area and run around the toilet block to insert a $1 coin to activate the water. By the time you manage to get back to the shower, about 30 seconds have already passed, as the water starts flowing immediately upon inserting the coin. This leaves you with barely any time to properly shower.

Important to note: If you’re using a Department of Conservation (DOC) Campsite Pass and opt for a self-contained site, they won’t allow you to use the toilets or the shower unless you pay an additional fee. Even if you don’t intend to use their trash facilities, they still charge you for waste disposal, which feels unreasonable and unfair.

On the positive side, the beach access is decent. However, the campsites themselves lack any semblance of privacy. The sites are crammed together on a bare patch of earthy and grassy field, which doesn’t provide any sense of seclusion or personal space.

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by the camp host, who, in fairness, was very friendly. However, the host frequently patrols the campsite, which adds to the lack of privacy, as you constantly feel observed. This, combined with the tightly packed sites, made it difficult to relax and enjoy our stay.

Given all these issues, we’re genuinely baffled by the positive reviews this campsite has received. We strongly advise against staying here and certainly wouldn’t recommend it to others.
