Large camping area with plenty of spots to camp. The site is down a winding country road and offers nice surrounds along a riverside. The toilets were okay, long drops but no loo paper! (But to be expected given the more remote location of this campsite). Free to stay, definitely worth it.
Quiet, beautiful spot. River is refreshing. Toilets are clean ... there are 3 lots of toilets spread out over reserve. Was there in January 2021, busy but not crazy busy. Lots of areas to park. No reception however walk up to entrance and may be able to receive signal which is intermittent.
Stayed here just after the school holidays one Friday night in Feb. It was such a peaceful site with around 10 other camper vans/ tents; there’s lots of room on this long field next to the river. The road over from SH5, along Waitata Road, was a pleasant drive on a sealed road, with the campsite being around 8km from SH5. Pitched the tent near the river and woke up to the gentle bubbling sounds of the water flowing past. Tent was lovely and cool in the morning due to the shade from the hills keeping the early morning sun off the tent. Long drop toilets, bring your own toilet paper. It’s great to have access to free campsites like this one. There is a donation tube near the information notice board.
We enjoyed the peace and nature here, river and mountains look awesome. Stayed in December 2020. No water, drop toilet, large area near river. Great stop from Taupo to Napier.

Excellent overnight stop between Taupo and Napier, good road from SH5. Lots of space. Love DoC campsites. Beautiful setting by river. Good swimming. Big field for football and frisbee. Toilets clean. Lots of insects at dusk - close windows / doors! Would highly recommend.
Heading for Napier, but had a long drive so decided to look at this as a stop over. Fantastic situation by the river. Very peaceful. Just make a donation in the honesty box. Can not comment on the toilets as we used our own, but there was a warning that the water supply was from the river so would need boiling. Only a few people here. Next day we decided to turn left out of the site and continue along Waikara road. This becomes a gravel road and is a real mountain track. Took us ages to reach SH2, but was well worth the effort for the magnificent views. We also found the Kiwi Creche and spent an hour looking round there. Can certainly recommend this asa quiet, peaceful stop over.
Big nice and quiet campground.
New toilets but not clean
Really nice free camp near the river (carefull sandfly !!) there is two toilets in a wood caban. Really nice spot for one night on the way to Napier or Taupo !

Good site with great view, nicely located beside a river. Stayed there on Boxing Day and it was too crowded, with only one toilet available. Still, a recommended place.
Lovely camp shame only longdrop toilets- would be great for fishing.
Nice wide open spacious spot by river. Plenty of room for everyone. Can get noisy at weekends with large local groups turning up. A few too many dogs off lead (meant to be an on lead place) and in the water where everyone swims is the reason for a slightly lower score.
Glenfalls was the bestest eva, defo gonna b there again
IT WAS LIT
DoC camps are fantastic stops for low budget camping. This is one of the better ones we've stayed at on our 15 night drive around the North Island. Beautiful spot right on a waterway with hills either side & beautiful sunset to boot. Short 8k sealed drive in from SH 5. Basic amenities but if you want more there are other options.
