Do not use Ezi Car Rentals.
We rented a car for two weeks from Auckland to Christchurch, but when we got to Wellington to catch the ferry to the South Island the ferry had broken down. There were no free spots for weeks, so we had to return the car at Wellington, get a passenger ferry over and re-rent a car on the South Island. We had already paid the two weeks and only used 6 days. Ezi Car refuses to re-imburse us for the 8 days and say we should have bought travel insurance. This would not occur at any other rental company. Please, do yourself a favor and choose a different rental company.

I rented a car from Ezi Car for 6 days just after Christmas 2024.
The total cost was 1,235$
I will never rent from Ezi Car Rental again due to 5 main reasons.
I hope this review is useful to you if you are considering renting a vehicle from them
1. Incorrect advice – Due to withholding of relevant information I ended up paying around 250$ more than I should have for this rental I did complain to the customer service person who apologised but the cost was not adjusted
2. Only focus is getting maximum money – When returning the car , I had to drop off the car with between quarter and half a tank of petrol. I couldn’t fill it up as my daughter was unwell and I had to rush. I spoke to the customer service person on their 0800 number. Despite this , they charged me 159$ (attached). If I had filled it , it would have cost me a maximum of 70$. I requested several times whether they can consider charging me 75$ under the circumstances (my daughter being unwell) . They absolutely refused
3. Unauthorised/duplicated charging of my credit card – Not only did they charge a huge penalty rate for the petrol but they took money off the credit card twice.
After complaining they did reverse it but if I had not noticed it, they would have effectively charged me over 310$ for just over half a tank of petrol
4. No regard for the customer - They don’t seem at all bothered about getting repeat customers. During several calls to them about the petrol and charges I got the strong impression that they don’t care if you rent from them again. So, they will get the maximum from you on the first go.
5. Carelessness – Two of the tyres were underinflated and the right front was significantly so. My partner pumped air before we started our journey but its something Ezi should have looked into.
Having said all this, the car itself was great and we were very happy with it.
However, the amount of stress and cost that was caused to me by renting from Ezi Car

Their hire conditions lack transparency and are dishonest.
When collecting car despite paying for their insurance they still take all of excess on card. Even worse they don’t show you their records of cars condition. It’s just blank. Which for a car with 50k on clock is dishonest. Their carbon copy doesn’t record any markings you make. So basically you sign a blank sheet for them to charge you for “damages”. Unlike any other car hire company. Do not trust.

Ezi Car refused to give me my prepaid vehicle due to not having a physical credit card.
They accepted my digital credit card for booking but refused to accept it for the pickup. I followed their instruction for the car pickup including bringing my original credit card under my name but they did not mention in the instructions that it must be a physical card only for the pickup. Their poor and incomplete instructions left me stranded in a foreign country with many bags and snowboard gear. They did not compromise at the pickup counter by being willing to accept another credit card or even cash. They were also not willing to accept another additional digital payment perhaps for further bond for the car. However, they were willing to accept my digital driver’s license to identify me for the booking - How double standard is that? Ezi Car was not Ezy at all. A criminal act hiding behind a play on words. Funny enough, I took 2 steps to the side and their competitor rented me a car with my digital credit card within minutes. Thank you Europcar! Ezi Car only refunded 50% of my deposit - They best spend it well because that's all they will get from me and possibly less from others who read this review. Be careful who you choose - Cheap budget trash will always cost you more in the end.

A trip we were looking forward to so much.
Disappointing- Non-Refundable rental contact
My husband and father in law arrived into QT a day before us and so decided to pick the car a day earlier (8th April), even though the car rental booking was from 9th to 12th April. As they had the car available, my husband decided to take it earlier to avoid any delays when we were to arrive on 9th April.
On 9th April, my kids and my cousin and I flew to QT, however with 2 unsuccessful attempts by the pilot to land, he decided it was safer to fly back to Auckland. A lot of other flights were cancelled, delayed and turned around that day due to the weather. On 9th April- check news on NZ Herald
The great thing was we got full refunds from the airlines, the Car parking services at Auckland Airport and the hotel my husband checked out off 2 days earlier as well, due to the change in circumstances, knowing & understanding he couldn't stay in QT, without us being there with him on holiday.
Unfortunately, the very tight rental car contract that Ezi car rentals follows, they were not willing to give us a refund for the 2 days we didn't use the car. They were not willing to even negotiate at any cost giving us the reason that their business would be geologised. I understand that and we would have at least appreciated coming to mutual grounds for deducting 1 day and refunding 1 day back to us, given it was nature preventing us from having our holiday.
Very very disappointing for the kids and us overall not to have our holiday, but even more disappointing to know that EZI Car rentals will not budge or negotiate at all even if it isn't your fault.
Unfortunately the Team leader in customer service is trained to just do her job and it is sad that she left me feeling even more upset during these times when things are difficult not just for a company, but also for families- and in our case not having the holiday at all and a loss of more than $300 overall.

Our flight into Christchurch Airport from Brisbane was delayed.
We had advised Ezi Car of our flight number when we booked, so imagine our horror when upon arrival we find the the place locked up with no one around and no alternate way to pick up our car. We ended up being stranded all night (not a pleasant experience for two seniors trying to sleep on an airport seat) and had to wait for them to reopen the next morning to get the car. My advice....do not use them

I hired from Tauranga Airport branch.
The email received prior to picking up with location details was clear. I booked a hybrid car and we received a Ford Puma that was only 4 months old. Great experience and we even received an email post hire to thank me for using them. I would recommend this company 100%. We took full insurance cover as it is not much more expensive than paying an excess and even though no damage was done it gave me peace of mind.

EXTREMELY BAD EXPERIENCE.
Staff are very rigid and unhelpful.
They searched for tiny scratches after you've returned car and claim that you have to pay for that - even you have purchased the full coverage insurance, as there is an excess of $4999NZD.
They have withheld $1000NZD from my credit card because of this issue and said the repair will take 4-6 weeks so the money will be withheld until they got an invoice from the car repairing company.
