Thanks to local enthusiasts, this hide (complete with binoculars) is an unexpected bonus - we saw six Hoiho, adult (moulting) and juvenile.
But please respect the birds and facility - and leave a donation.

Ok, you won't be missing the Punakaiki Rocks but also stop at the bridge and look at these fantastic bluffs - and the river and beach.

We loved this place - where you can see Tuatara, Tui chasing Bellbirds away from "their" food, and many others, right in a city?
Trees, dams buildings - its all good fun

these guys were relaxed and friendly at ticket and marshalling- the boat was suprisingly smooth riding in a reasonable Cook St swell/chop.
The food was not up to same standard though.

Easy walk with a twist - we had no idea of the importance of honeydew in beech forest regeneration- excellent DOC storyboards and a lovely spot.

Sensitive and interesting, particulary interweaving the two cultures, Maori and European, in the cool rugged south.
A mini Te Papa, and made more relevant with the howling gale outside!

Recyclers dream - take a goldminers aquaduct, now abandoned, use it for the first hydro power scheme in the area, then when superseded, rebuild it - still putting power into the grid!
Engineering, flora, fauna, history = one good walk.
