  • We hired a starRV Polaris 6 Nova for a long weekend in Auckland.

We had an amazing time, the campervan was clean and easy to drive. On arrival at the depot, staff showed us through the campervan and explained clearly how to use everything.

We freedom camped for 3 nights out of the 4 and the camper was well equipped for this, so nice to have a warm shower after our winter beach swims!

Extra shout out the the shuttle driver who raced my husband back to the depot to collect the portacot I had left behind and managed to get him back to the airport in time go catch our flight!

  • I spent 3 weeks traveling from the South Island of NZ to the North in a Star RV (Polaris 6) and it was by far the best travelling experience I’ve ever had.

The RV was spacious and packed with features and amenities. It was a smooth, comfortable drive, and an even more comfortable sleep.

The entire experience was second to none. I would happily and confidently hire a Star RV again without hesitation.

  • Avoid Star RV at all costs.

Our 32-day motorhome rental with Star RV in New Zealand turned into a series of problems. The vehicle was clearly not properly checked or maintained. We dealt with a fridge that didn’t work for nearly half the trip, a damaged rear door, a non-functioning airbag, and an expired gas bottle. For a company renting vehicles meant for long-distance travel and remote camping, this is unacceptable.

Because of these issues, we lost three full days of our holiday in repair shops instead of exploring the country. These unplanned detours caused extra fuel costs, cancellation fees for activities, and a lot of stress. Star RV cost us time, money, and a significant part of a trip we had planned for a long time.

The compensation process was just as disappointing. We contacted them more than a week before drop-off in Auckland, explained the issues, outlined our expectations, and asked for someone familiar with the case to be available on site. Despite this, no one at the branch had been informed, except for one employee, Vinay, who genuinely tried to help within his limited responsibilities.

When we returned the vehicle, the team suddenly scrambled to address everything they had ignored earlier. They delayed the process so long that they only presented us with a laughably low offer — a little over $500 instead of the roughly $900 we were owed for the lost days — when we were already at the airport and about to board our flight home. With all additional costs included, we estimate we are owed around $2,500.

There was no proper apology, no ownership, and no real customer service — just empty phrases and an obvious attempt to minimize their responsibility.

Based on our experience, Star RV seems more focused on pushing vehicles out quickly than on safety, maintenance, or customer care. We strongly advise future customers to stay far away. Many other rental providers in New Zealand take their responsibilities far more seriously.

  • We have had so many issues with our 6 berth star rv campervan/motorhome, it was filthy on pick up, and we had to return as there was a brake light out that we didn't realise.

Curtains filled with mould, sinks not draining, damaged sections, windows leak, mould in storage compartments, check engine light on.

Also bare in mind that they won't provide any cleaning cloths, tea towels or anything to get you going, except a couple of toilet sanitation blocks for the chemical toilet.

For the price we paid it is not acceptable, their service has been horrible as well suggesting that we use our valuable holiday time to bring it in for a service. I shouldn't have to, they at one point booked a service and told us to go to it, disregarding we had a prebooked experience that we were not going to miss, their response was, it won't take long.

I suggest going with another company, maybe one that prides themselves on clean vehicles.

  • Where do we start, from the moment we arrived at the Queenstown office, staff unprofessional, don't like their job just a production line, total lack of any customer service at all.

They do not explain where instructions are in the campervan incase of problems, which are plenty!! We had to come back to Jucy/Star twice regarding issues and were told we should have youtube it!!??? How is that possible when you are off grid and remote!? No cleaning materials provided for waste cassette or PPE for when changing, Campervan nothing like what is on the website, we booked months in advance and requested a new model, we got the oldest that should not be in service to anyone and have plenty of photos. Shower does not drain properly and will fill up then go into the toilet floor, fridge broken, no electric heater!!, only gas which runs out pretty quick. toilet door flings open when travelling, super noisy, quilt smelt, sheets super old and faded general decor old stains, list goes on. Management needs to take the campervan out for a week and see what they think. I'm sure they must realise people save a long time for holidays, its certainly not cheap but do they care if your trip is ruined?

  • We rented the RV via an agent who offered an insurance to cover the $ 7500 excess damage fee in case of damage for a considerably lower price.

Apparently missing income leads StarRV to fill the whole time when picking up the RV with explaining their idiot policy: they charge your credit card with $ 7500 ( we knew that but what's wrong with using the credit card to just secure damage payments?). Then they charge a bit over 2% commission on this amount!! Finally they explain that any damage, even small things, must be reported and every single incident will lead to another charge of $ 7500! After returning, these amount(s) are returned after 3 weeks. We did not have any damage fortunately but do they really expect renters to actually call them (unless they can't drive the RV anymore)? We did not get any explanation of how things worked, and the RV proved different in some respect than similar models we had before and hardly any documentation about the working of everything was in the RV. We called for explanation only to be sent back to the rental location (fortunately we only drove a few km to a supermarket when we discovered an unclear feature). On returning the RV, the waiting time was over an hour which we found fairly long. The RV itself (Mercedes Sprinter type) was fine (except for the usual things which could have been much handier) and economical (1:11,5 diesel) but I would not choose StarRV again.

  • We waited for a shuttle for 45 mins.

The campervan was new and well decorated, but, the office was not so well managed eg. wifi could not be used, long waiting time even though you hire Star RV. The last shuttle service is 4pm while the office is open until 4:30pm. Many people returned campervans and had to get a pricy taxi. The manager was not friendly, but the others were friendly and nice. Just need some improvement of service.

  • The Hercules 6 berth Star RV was a pretty good vehicle.

Beds were large and reasonably comfortable. Star RV though is really just Apollo Campervans less than a year old. There is none of the special promised service on pickup or drop off, you pick them up from Apollo and get in line with everyone else there.

  • Motorhome was well equipped and reasonably clean.

Service at check in was very poor. Be careful when you book as unless you opt for Star RV insurance excess reduction they sting you with a deluge of charges. The worst is that they take the full insurance excess from your credit card, try to hold onto it for 21 days after your trip ends and charge you a 2% credit card fee of which they refuse to refund when they return your excess. In our case, our excess was $7500 and the card fee was about $160. I believe that charging a credit card fee and then not refunding it when the money is returned to you is conpletely unethical, especially when they recieve the refunded fee from your credit card company. This and holding onto your deposit for as long as possible is purely a profit making exercise for Star RV and must be stopped. I sent a formal letter of complaint and recieved the credit card fee and my deposit back within a couple of days. Make sure you do too. Ensure that you hire with Star Rv with your eyes open!!!
