Information

Self contained camper vans from Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown, with a focus on amazing customer service. Check out the new Adventurer model with a full fridge, solar and internal power.

Welcome to The Pod Campervan Rentals, where you can hire self contained camper vans from Christchurch, Queenstown or Auckland . Our professionally fitted affordable rental vans provide you with freedom and cover all your camping needs. You will get more for your dollar with The Pod than any other campervan hire company in New Zealand.

We pride ourself on having the best customer service in the market, and we work extremely hard to keep our customers happy from their first contact with us. We want you to have a stress free holiday in this amazing country, so get in touch to feel what it's like to receive genuine customer service.

For the 2019 - 20 season we have introduced the Adventurer model to our fleet which sits in the mid range market and comes with an auxiliary battery which is charged when the vehicle is in motion or through the roof mounted solar panel. This has allowed us to install a 60 litre fridge, internal lights, a water pump powered faucet, 12v and USB internal power and also an internal power point through an inverter for lap top and small device charging. The full queen sized bed has been retained meaning this is truely luxurious camping at an affordable price.

We've also introduced the Economy Pod which allows you to secure a camper that has done higher kilometres at a much cheaper rate. The interiors have all been renovated so they are like new, meaning the only difference to the Traveler Pod is that the Economy Pods have done in excess of 200 000 kms. These camper have been with us for a number of years so they have had the benefit of our very strict maintenance and servicing schedule allowing us to continue to send them out on the road with confidence. We offer a price guarantee on the Economy Pod where we will match any other quote for a similar vehicle, so just send us an email with the relevant quote and we will match it :) An Economy Pod Campervan is the cheapest you will find in Queenstown, Christchurch and Auckland - guaranteed.

We now offer a large range of optional extras for hire including transmission guarantees, airport transfers, kitchen dining tents, night time insect screens, portable 12v showers, privacy shower / toilet tents, WIFI, roof mounted luggage storage, bike racks, hammocks, and the option to drop and run at the end of your rental meaning you do not need to refuel, empty the grey water or clean the exterior of the camper prior to drop off.

Being certified as self contained means you can camp in many more areas throughout New Zealand. Most Local Governments in popular tourist areas have introduced bylaws restricting where people can and cannot camp, but having a self contained campervan with us allows you to stay in those areas.

We offer a $50 refund to all clients who post four or more photos of themselves and their Pod during their holiday and post it on their public Instagram account. It's well worth having a look through our Instagram account to see some of the amazing adventures our clients have had over the last few years. We can also be found on Facebook and Twitter - have a look through our Facebook feed also to find links and recommendation of places to visit and experiences that should not be missed during your holiday here. We also recommend following us on Facebook for the duration of your trip to find out any weather or roading alerts that may affect your travel.

If you take the time to compare our camper van prices, the extras we supply free of charge, and the quality of the vehicle fit outs and the high quality of our customer service, we are confident that we offer the best value for money in the New Zealand campervan market.

So please get in touch - we look forward to working with you towards a memorable New Zealand holiday :)

We had an amazing time travelling in Little katie!
Mike and his team were great to deal with and we would highly recc this campervan company!
We found this company to be the most affordable for what we needed and they did not charge a relocation fee or mileage fee which is rare when looking for a van!
Had no issues at all with the van and will be back to NZ for another trip in the new year!

Having used pod campers for our tour of the north and south island, we were very pleased with the whole experience. Pod were very good at communicating prior and during the van rental period!

Our van was the adventurer model which i would highly recommend. It came with everything we needed, camping chairs, table, cooking utensils ect. The van was a self contained van with a toilet, fridge and a solar panel on the roof with an auxiliary battery. This meant the fridge could run permanently and allow reasonable food shops to last 3-4 days! Also you could charge your phones/ tablets ect with handy power points which also run off the auxiliary battery, which allows for overnight charging which is very handy. We also opted for the kitchen tent, which was extremely handy as we saw allot of wet days which allowed us to still cook dinners and make breakfast without getting wet. A heater and hookup lead is also supplied which allows you to keep warm in the tent or in the van. Using the heater in the van also stops condensation building overnight which is a massive bonus.

We also opted for the full insurance which was very handy. Having had a slight incident with the waste pipe, pod had the issue fixed and sorted in just over an hour!

I would highly recommend pod campers as its great value for money! Really sad to have given the van back at the end of the experience!

Loved every minute! We booked the adventurer model with full insurance for one month travelling the North and South islands of NZ.

Communication was great from the Pod Rentals team and the van suited our needs perfectly. I would recommend the adventurer model as the fridge and solar panel made things easy and more homely.

We also rented the kitchen tent which was great for rainy spring days - it meant we could sit/cook outside without getting wet. If you have the kitchen tent, when booking camp sites, request a grass pitch so the pegs can go into the ground easily (sometimes you get gravel).

Gutted to have dropped the van back :( we loved our experience and would 100% use Pod Rentals again.

My husband and I rented “Little Nikau” from The Pod Campervan Rentals for a week while exploring the South Island. The booking process was extremely easy and we loved being able to see the island with the ability of freedom camping. Everyone was super friendly and helpful the entire process. We booked an economy van which was great in price, didn’t have any issues with breakdowns, and drove beautifully. The bed was super comfy and had plenty of storage room for us for both our belongings and our food for a few days. The provided gas cooker, cooking supplies, dishes, etc were all in great condition for us. We loved that we were able to park in normal parking spots that larger campers wouldn’t be able to park in but still have plenty of room to be comfortable and not be crunched for space. It was also nice to know our van was easily recognizable amongst the tons of Mighty and Britz vans we saw everywhere & not trying to figure out which one was ours. We were extremely sad to say goodbye to our little van come the end of the week. I highly recommend renting from this company!

Only reason why we docked a point is that the van’s alignment was off a bit which was slightly annoying but everything else was perfect.

The Pod Campervan Rentals responds:

Hi Christine and thanks for the great feedback on your time with us. We chose our branding as we wanted to be a little different - and good to see it means you could find your van easily amongst the white ones! We'll take care of Little Nikau for you in your absence!

Additional information: For any of our wonderful Pod clients - both current and prospective, if you find any issues with your Pod while you're on your travels please let us know at the time, as something like a wheel alignment is a very quick and easy fix, wherever you are in New Zealand. We'd much rather know straight away so we can make your trip more enjoyable, as we aim to make every Pod rental a great experience for you :)

Good size van for two people. Just enough storage if you pack light. Blackout curtains were great! Perfect size van for all car parks. The bed was very comfortable. Location of toilet was not great and wasted space.

Reviewed 9 days ago

The Pod Campervan Rentals responds:

Thanks for the review Sebastian. With the recent change to the self containment requirements in New Zealand, the toilet in all campervans which are certified as self contained is now required to be in a permanent fixed position and accessible at night when the bed is down. This meant we had to change the configuration of our entire fleet of Economy and Traveler Pod campervans over winter 2019. Luckily, as you found, the bed is still super comfortable regardless of the toilets position :)

Wonderful experience! Our Pod worked beautifully for us as we explored the south island. Not too big but had all of the essentials. The support from the Pod team was great as we had a few hiccups along the way. They were quick to respond and resolve any issues. Highly recommend.

The Pod Campervan Rentals responds:

Thanks Jon! It was good to know a couple of decent windscreen chips didn't slow you down though! Look forward to seeing to back here one day :)

The car is all you need. It is well equipped and you get things like chairs and a table for free where other companies charge you a lot for. Mike and Liz are alway available and responding Mails at the point. I would always rent a van with them again.

The Pod Campervan Rentals responds:

Thanks so much for the review Dennis! We've just updated our website FAQ's page also which tells folks exactly what they do get in their Pod for free, as well as some other useful things like luggage storage dimensions, ferry crossing information etc etc. Thanks again :)

I am having an amazing camping experience on my own - yeah !!! In this beautiful country New Zealand from its nature to its people I am driving this great campervan called Little Whetu I.e Star that is reliable and has driven more than 1000 kms on my journey from Christ church to Wellington then to Napier and Rotorua then to to Auckland north shores . Backed by great service from Destiny Leigh , a fate filled day where I got fantastic service from Destiny and Mike who has renewed my extension twice . What a team!!!Love my total camping experience so please check them out and definetly book book book in advance and don't be afraid to live life.
In comparison to the others out there on the road I'm ecstatic I chose the two berth campervan . My wish I would love to buy Little Whetu but alas I must her with many other adventurous travellers.!!!

Our experience with pod campervan rental was excellent, we picked up an economy van for a week out of queenstown in October, drove north and south and camped in DOC Campsites. The bed in back was comfortable and everything we needed was included, even a thick duvet to keep us warm in the chilly nights. Was also way easier to drive than those massive slow behemoth campers we overtook on the road! Would definitely recommend.

The Pod Campervan Rentals responds:

Thanks very much Rory - we agree that the smaller vans are more manoeuvrable on some of the NZ roads than the larger campers - and glad to hear you kept warm!

Great campervan and super friendly and helpful staff! We rented the more basic 2-berth option for a week and it was everything we needed and expected, plus had the benefit of being a lot easier to drive and park than the giant options of other companies, not to mention it was great value. We took it from Queenstown down to Milford Sound, up to Aoraki/Mt Cook and back to Queenstown with no problems at all. I would certainly rent from Pod again.

We loved our pod! It took us from Queenstown to Wanaka to Haast. And from there to Nelson, then down to Christchurch and much more. We had the freedom to go wherever we wanted, whenever we wanted! We were amazed by stunning views on all the drives and on all our hikes and runs. Our favorite hikes were on the Routeburn track, Roy's Peak, the Abel Tasman track, and exploring around Lake Tekapo. We cooked many tasty meals in our kitchen and didn't eat out once while we had our trusty pod. If you want to do that, be sure to order extra fuel when you make your reservation. That came in handy. We have absolutely adored exploring the South Island these past two weeks!

Great to hear you made the most of freedom camping - you certainly got to see some of the gorgeous places in NZ while doing so! Hopefully we'll see you back doing the north island next time :)

We spent 3 weeks in our pod campervan touring the South and North islands during the winter months - very brave of us! Actually the weather turned out in our favour and for the most part we were fairly warm in our little pod (although I would recommend taking sleeping bags to use as well as the warm duvet provided!).

Driving around NZ is the only way to do it and having the self-contained pod meant we could pretty much stop off anywhere across the two islands. Ours had a fridge too which was really useful as it meant we could buy a few days worth of food and go completely off grid. It also has Bluetooth so you can listen to your own music and podcasts on the longer drives.

The stove held up for most of the trip although it was tricky getting a meal going with strong winds hitting the back of the car but we always managed it in the end (top tip - turn the front of the car to face the wind so the stove is sheltered).

The bed was also surprisingly comfortable and definitely big enough for the two of us.

If you're considering hiring a campervan for NZ, for the value Pod offers I'd definitely recommend!

Reviewed 2 months ago

The Pod Campervan Rentals responds:

Yes you guys were brave Alex!

Our bigger Pod Adventurers are fitted out with the fridges now which, as you found out make off grid life easy and as long as there is sun, you can park up for a few days without worrying as our roof mounted solar panels keep you charged up.

In response to our previous clients requests, this season we offer our custom made Pod kitchen/dining tents as optional extras so you can cook in windy conditions. Also you can hire extra duvets if you want to be that much more toasty! Thanks for the review :)
