Lion Rock is Piha’s most iconic landmark. Lion Rock sits between Piha and North Piha beaches, offering people who climb it, spectacular views in all directions.
It is not possible to climb to the top after a rockfall made access too dangerous. At the end of the short, steep climb, there is a pou to a Te Kawerau a Maki ancestress, Ngati Tangiaro Taua, who loved this spot. There is a stone seat, so it is a good stop off place for a rest and to enjoy the views. There is interpretation on the way up about the rock and its former inhabitants.

Spectacular black sand beaches. You can enjoy surfing or swimming.
One of our favourite beaches in New Zealand. Black sand, lots of beautiful walkways. But be careful, the sea is often dangerous for bathing.

Very nice beach with volcanic sand and sea lions right in the middle.

Amazing sunset and beach.
Climb the big rock. Nice warm black sand beach. Surfboard may be of use.
Beautiful wind swept beach. Seems like good swimming, but only allowed between the flags which are not all that far apart.
Good for climbing, long walks on the beach.
Thanks to all the good people working for the NZ Department of Conservation - for all your hard work - making NZ more beautiful, accessable and healthy! Cheers 😍
