Salt Air is the go-to way to see the Bay of Islands and the top of the North Island. The aerial view just changes everything. There's a Rankers deal here too, promo code RANKERS for 10% off, which helps when some of these experiences aren't cheap.
The half-day fly-drive to Cape Reinga is probably my pick. You fly up one way, drive back through the Aupouri Peninsula, with stops at 90 Mile Beach, Te Paki sand dunes and the Cape itself. Pilots and drivers are consistently described as knowledgeable and easy company. One traveller noted the conditions can get bumpy and Salt Air give you the option to pull out on the day, which says something about how they operate.
If you've got the budget, the heli-cruise combo is the one that gets people really talking. Private island beaches, a floating helipad, then lifting off over the Bay of Islands to the Hole in the Rock. It's a proper day out. Worth packing a decent lunch and a jacket either way, Cape Reinga is nearly always windy.
