I love this place.
Snapper are generally so guarded and super difficult to spot. It's hard to fathom that normality when you visit here.
If you can get your hands on any sort of snorkelling gear, you're in for a treat.
If you haven't done much swimming or snorkelling before, this is such a great spot. There's so much to see by the rocks to the right of the beach. It's often the place with the most fish. You don't need to venture far for an awesome time.
You can head out to the island itself for an increased adventure, but there's still plenty to see without needing to head over there.
If you don't want to get into the water, at lowish tide, take a walk to the rocks to the right of the beach (they are pretty flat) and look over the rock shelf. You'll be surprised with what you see :)
Not so good after very recent heavy rain or if there's a large swell running.

So many fish, great Snorkelling and Scenery
Snorkel in the marine reserve where everything has been protected for over 30 years, there is no were else in New Zealand where you can access this much marine life close to the beach. Snorkel with massive snapper, schools of blue maomao, kahawai & plenty other marine life. These friendly fish are used to visitors & make this an awesome experience. Its recommended that you remove shiny things from your fingers, those inquisitive snapper have got pretty big chops.

We attempted to go snorkelling but the wind was strong and the waves were large.
As a result, the water was murky and not much could be seen. Beautiful beach otherwise.

On a Sunday it can be crowded, however we saw a lot of different species of fish and we had a great time.

Even with the low visibility we had we still managed to see a lot of fish and even a sting ray.

I thought these were really good value and friendly.
Were able to provide my eyesight prescription in my snorkelling mask when I forgot my contact lenses.

We've been here a few times and experienced different conditions from clear to cloudy water.
You won't see much if there is a big swell because the water gets very stirred up. Be prepared for a steep 5 min walk to the beach and snorkel at low tide.
