I arrived here tired, hungry and yes, a little crabby but within an hour this quirky site had worked it's magic.

The hosts were super friendly and the views beautiful. Mobile data worked great so no need to pay for wifi. The little shop was well stocked with essentials and the shower was amazing!!! There is nothing a great shower can't put right. And to top it off I saw gloworms for the first time ever. What a show. I went to see them at the bottom dell. Luckily someone was just coming out so gave me instructions. FYI, follow the rope round to the right then use another rope to get down safely onto the creek bed.

    Such a lovely place.

Definitely choose an unpowered site. Beautiful views. Very clean facilities. Huge kitchen, with cosy set up of tables, chairs en sofa’s. Glowworms can be found in the forest around and you can walk to a waterfall from the camping. If you want a rest, this place is a perfect spot

Good campsite with a lovely kitchen / fireplace with nice sofas and chairs to enjoy the warmth.

Toys for the kids. Plenty of board games. Overall cozy place. There were not many campers when we were there. Parts of the campgrounds are under construction, but not problematic.

Spotlessly clean, wood burning stove in the amenities block for the chilly nights and super friendly managers. Would recommend!

Very clean facilities, great kitchen and showers and common area with woodstove - very nice on a winter night. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Wifi is paid for as an extra but it is fast and good coverage. On site waterfall was peaceful

Probably the best campsite we were in NZ.

Super nice staff and great location. The common areas (kitchen, bath,..) are super clean and well equipped and we probably saw more glow worms there as in Waitomo.

    Definitely coming back.

We really enjoyed our stay here.

It is one of the cleanest, friendliest camp grounds we have ever been to. The staff were great, the kitchen facilities were great and the bathrooms really nice! There was plenty to do on site with glow worms and bush walks plus great fishing near by. Definitely will be staying again.

The best site we stayed at on our South Island trip!

$50 for a powered site for 2 people with access to a pristine bathroom block, fully stocked kitchen (they also had a bin of people’s food donations if you needed spices or sauces) + a gas bbq and… pizza oven!? Lounge was cozy and super homey with a wood fired stove, games and a TV. The night sky is amazing and clear and views across the valley into the mountains. Plus an amazing wall of glow worms a couple minutes walk from our site had us questioning why we paid in Waitomo. Host was incredibly friendly, lots of walk in spots on a Wednesday night. This place is sweet, don’t skip it!

Stunning location but we turned up and unfortunately had committed the cardinal sin of not booking in advance.

Got told by the host that no powered sites available but gave us a spot in the open tin shed next to carpark and rubbish bins which was very noisy. Walking through the camp later on there were unused sites available! Facilities are excellent, just avoid the tin shed.

Even though we contacted the park with more than 72 hours notice, they claimed it was less than and would not refund us.

We decided not to risk driving Arthur's Pass due to the hazardous conditions of a large dump of snow. Their response was "...just when the weather is clearing up..." They were obviously reading different meteorological advice. In the end, we had a much better trip up Lewis Pass after staying overnight at Hanmer Springs in a freedom camp site. Not a good way to treat paying customers who are unfamiliar with the road in and driving a campervan! Be aware that, if you intend on staying here, don't pay up front.

    WARNING!!!

I never write reviews but am so incensed by the garbage Jacksons Retreat Alpine Holiday Park sells at top $ I just had to...

    1. A crappy tent site for $48 is bad enough, more than any other far superior sites on the South Island but ... wait for it ...

    2. We booked a pre erected tent for 4 fully expecting a 4 man tent in the style of the canvas tents available. You need to look at the photo to see what they provided - if it wasn't serious it would be hilarious!

A $50 warehouse tent stuffed in the corner of a hay shed on the dirt!!

I camped here in a tent for one night.

It cost $48 which I thought was very expensive for one person in a tent. Perhaps I was charged the same as a camper van. I was given a pitch that was not flat and the ground was very stony, so it was not a good experience in a tent.

The kitchen is well equipped, including a range of crockery and cutlery. The showers and bathrooms are clean and tidy, and there is a hairdryer.

It rained a lot when I was there, I was surprised there was not a drying room or facilities for people with wet equipment.

If you’re walking or cycling, and not in a van, there are probably other places nearby that are cheaper that can give you what you need. It’s probably great if you’re in a campervan, not what I hoped for though.
