This place is so stunning! It has such a wonderful atmosphere, I was so relaxed after three nights. Very quiet, good coffee and homemade cakes (try the spicy chilly-brownies, they're yummy!). No powered sites and just two showers, but doesn't matter at this very special place. Loved it!
This is THE best campsite in New Zealand ! Go there and you won’t be disappointed! The stone oven pizza is a must do too, really worth making your own pizza, it’s so good ! The brownies, muffins are incredible too. We were supposed to stay one night and ended up staying 5 ☺️ so cheap compare to what you get in a doc. The view is amazing, so are the people working there, so helpful, WiFi is free and works perfectly, everything is clean, you can’t find a better place!
Thank you 🙏🏼
Definitely the best campsite ever ! People are so welcoming and friendly, commun area super nice, the sunset is amazing and the labyrinthe is a good idea ! Love it ! 12$pp for one night or 30$ for 3 nights. Thank you so much to create a place like this !

Fantastic place, which just keeps getting better!!! Lovely owners and great staff who are always happy to help!!!
Grassy field with vegetation partitions at $12 a night, no powered sites. Beach and river are right there and lots of white baiters were out. Being October the main cafe was not really running yet (coffee only from 9-10am which is when someone is around to collect camping fees) but the communal lounging space/cafe space is a selling point foe the place. Indoor and outdoor seating with fireplaces (no dry wood left when i was there but there is a ton of wood waiting to be dried from the beach). Shower on an honesty box system at $2 and it was actually hot. Kitchen is sort of small for all the people needing to cook (which is everyone without the cafe running) and you should bring your own stuff as kitchen supplies are limited. Other than that no complaints. I would love to stay here in nice weather and during the summer.
This is the best campsite on the entire South Island. I almost don’t want to give it 10/10 as then more people will discover this magical spot. Jesse and his family have thought of every possible need a Traveller may have! Warm fire for winter, delicious home cooked biscuits and soothing warm showers are some of the facilities available. Their campsite comes with a beautiful story and they are happy to share their exerpeince and knowledge of the area with you! Don’t miss out on this West Coast gem! We will definitely be back to base ourselves here and explore Kahurangi NP further!

Came across Gentle Annie by accident, and oh so pleased we did. Cannot rate this campground high enough for wonderful hospitality shown by all staff, the amazing cafe and muffins, plus home cooked pizza's in the pizza oven creates a meeting place for campers to enjoy each others company.
The scenery and walks along the rugged beach, collecting fire wood for the pizza oven and building fires gives you the freedom of yesteryear. Of all camps we have visited this is the best, and well worth the time to travel here not only to enjoy the camp but the amazing surrounding area.
Facilities are basic but clean.
It has been one of our best stays in entire NZ. A bit off the famous routes but every minute worth it you drive longer to get here. Great cafe with awesome muffins as well as a top10 bucket list of things to do in that beautiful area. Stunning sunsets which I you can enjoy with self-made pizza in the stone oven. 2 nights for 24 NZD pp in a campervan.
In 10 weeks of travel this was my most memorable and favourite stay.
It’s hard to say exactly why but they’ve sprinkled a little bit of magic on to camping and made it shine.
They have a lovely ethos of positivity and it makes the place friendly and homely.
Beautiful spot, perfect for fishing, good facilities. No official check out! One of the best campsite in NZ.
The best campsite in New Zealand.
We loved our stay at Gentle Annie. It’s the best campsite we’ve stayed at and would highly recommend to everyone.
The place is extremely welcoming and offers loads such as warm showers, wood fired pizza oven, a bbq and an awesome cafe that has brilliant coffee.
A must visit if you’re in the area.

Touring New Zealand in a motorhome we'd planned to spend 1 night at Gentle Annie's, & spent 3 nights similar to previous reviewer.
Gentle Annie's is a little piece of paradise, neither sophisticated nor pretentious, just good honest people running a charming beautiful camp site & cafe. They run an honesty box for the $2 showers which is heartwarming in today's world.
The cafe food was fresh & largely home grown or organic, while the overall ambience has a bohemian feel. As a bonus the beach sunset was stunning.
If this review sounds appealing to you, then don't hesitate to stay, chill & recharge the batteries.

Beautiful spot, right by the sea with fantastic sunsets, fires on the beach and really welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Lovely people running the camp and very helpful.

Laid back, friendly and helpful people managing the campground. Large sites with hedges marking some sites (lots of privacy). Free wifi! Kitchen facilities a little lacking (Bring your own cutlery/plates) but great outdoor gas burners and BBQ available. Honesty/trust system used for showers ($2 for 5 min) and laundry). Enjoyable stay with easy access to the beach.
This is heaven on earth! Excellent, clean and generous facilities, honesty system which makes both parties feel trusted, great coffee and baked goods, friendly hosts, lush grass to camp on and beautiful beach as far as the eye can see. Stunning sunsets. We wanted to stay forever! Do yourself a favour and stay 2 or more nights. Relax, unwind and take it all in.

This place is a gem! The friendly owners were really lovely and Jesse went out of his way to accommodate us. Even let us park on the gravel as it was heavy rain. He leaves the cowshed, (cafe which was closed, being the cold season) open 24hours. A place to use the free and fast wifi, to charge your gears and to sit and have your meals. Campers can self check in and they had a deal going. 3 nights for $30pp so we stayed for 3. I'm glad we did too. Showers were fantastic and free, toilets were clean, and kitchen very small. Only 2 cooking elements but are welcome to use your cooker in there if you have one. Beautiful dining area and large outdoor seating area as well. This place is amazing. Brown water here but theres a sign that explains all about it. The owners are not always there, some things work on an honesty box system. Even had homebaked goods on the counter. Just leave the money in the box. Although a group of foreigners claimed they had no money to pay for things they had taken/used/eaten. Here's some advice for visitors to this country: please don't take Kiwi hospitality for granted, as it could ruin it for all of us. Clean up after yourselves, its not that hard! And learn what the word honesty means. It's very important.
Most amazing campsite I've ever stayed at. Very rustic cafe to hang out in and eat great food with free wifi. Hot free showers and nice facilities. Small kitchen, great for dishes and fridge available. Campsite is right on the beach and fires are allowed which is amazing for watching the sunset. Beautiful place to stay would 100% recommend. No complaints!

Brilliant! Just how a camp should be... relaxed, beautiful, friendly. we loved the cheeky Weka! Perfect for those riding the Old Ghost Road.

Thank you for your lovely comments Freddy, it was great to have you here! While we think we're one of the cheapest camping grounds around for what we offer, we want to make it even better with our new price of 3 NIGHTS FOR $30 PER PERSON! There is so much to see and do at, and around Gentle Annie-you won't want to leave. The Cowshed Cafe/Campers Lounge area makes an ideal place to just take a break, relax, catch up on some emails, Skype with the family, hang out with fellow travellers and plan your next adventures :) We can't wait to have you here! Top 10 things to see and do at, and around, Gentle Annie: 1) Explore the Oparara Arches 2) Charming Creek Walkway-beautiful waterfall 3) Chasm Creek Glow Worm Tunnel (at night time) 4) Gentle Annie Point Maze and Coastal Walk (great spot to watch the sunset and to see Hector dolphins) 5) Heaphy Track (1 hour loop walk at the start of the track) 6) Denniston Plateau (intersting historic coal town with a stunning view) 7) Cape Foulwind Seal Colony (beautiful coastal walk-lots of pups at the moment!) 8) Lake Hanlon (pretty bush walk to a lake with great reflections of the surrounding hills) 9) Have a bonfire on the beach-bring some marshmallows! 10) Bike/walk the Old Ghost Road-world class mountain bike track that follows the Mokihinui River upstream. With the main thing, to relax, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy your time at Gentle Annie :)

Beautiful location and very friendly staff. The gravel access road was okay with our low-slung caravan and there were lots of camping sites to choose from. The hot showers and wifi were free and much appreciated.
The location could be a bit exposed in nasty westerly weather and some of the hollows in the grassy fields were pretty soft and likely to become ponds in heavy rain. Well worth the modest camping fees.
Nice spot to stay. Easy going, woodfire in the evening. Bar closed during wintertime. Fine facilities, kind staff in the morning.
One of our favourite spots on the whole of the South Island! Very cheap and the wifi is amazing, and free! The camping spots are beautiful overlooking the estuary and sea. There are some great walks nearby and the Cowshed Cafe is open in the evening for campers to relax! Spent 3 days here chilling. Well worth a visit if on the west coast but bring some insect repellent! The sandflies aren't too bad here but still don't want to risk being bitten :)
My favorite campground in New Zealand.
This place was great even in the rain. Cowshed Cafe on site offered free wifi and a place to hang out. Clean toilets and hot showers. Campsite well laid out, hedges giving good privacy to each camper. Very close to the beach. Worth the $12 per person would definitely come back here!
Lovely spot on the west coast, nice site with very friendly, chilled and accommodating family hosts. Plus a great cafe, epic pizzas! For trampers - a good location for starting or finishing 'the old ghost road' walk (only 15k down the road) or a stopover to refresh from some time on the Heaphy track if you are travelling down the west coast. Overall recommended highly, and if I'm back in the area will definitely swing by and say hi!
Awesome place, awesome people, awesome scenery, great facility.
This is a great spot for a great price at $12 per person! We loved the Cowshed Cafe for relaxing and using WiFi in the evening when it was already dark outside. Very cosy! Toilets and showers clean. There is a fridge and freezer the campers can use and laundry for $2. It is possible to self check in, if there is no one of the staff around. Perfect place!
This place is stunning!! The people that run it are the friendliest and most generous people with their time and local knowledge that I have come across. The accommodation and facilities are amazing and well presented. It's dog friendly and it was amazing to be able to take my dog along to join in on the fun.
I'll be back with more friends next time.
This is definitely my favourite campsite in New Zealand. Stunning beach in front of native bush and beautiful river access! Paradise! The crew here is so warm and welcoming and Yoyo at the cafe knows how to cook up incredible food, sourced from his massive garden next to the cafe which you can explore! You know you've made it to paradise when you drive down to the beach along the shingle road, which gets well maintained and kept up by the local council, meandering through native bush next to a river that's now safe from a dam! Great clean amenities and highly recommend taking a couple extra days to call this spot home :) A+++
Lovely surrounds, but completely unsuitable for a large motor home. Potholed single lane access road. Very small lots. Emailed to confirm access and availability. Was informed both were fine and booking not necessary but we arrived to find access scary and unmanageable and no spaces available for us. Probably a lovely place to pitch a tent...
Gentle Annie - Seaside Camping and Accommodation responds:
Thank you for your feedback Megan, I'm sorry you weren't happy with your experience. We regularly host very large motor homes (9m +) and have never had any prior complaints or issues with the road access, to the contrary, we often have positive comments about how beautiful it is following the Mokihinui river to our camping ground at the beach. The public gravel road is council maintained and operated-Megan it's great to provide any feed back to the Buller District Council as this will encourage them to fill any potholes faster (788 9111). As long as you travel slowly, negotiating any potholes and other passing vehicles is safe and comfortable. Our camping ground features large level area's (gravel and lawn), the lawn area's are firm and free-draining making it very suitable for large vehicles. Our sites are open-plan (not numbered), this provides areas of space and privacy that many of our guests love and comment on. Unfortunately, Megan, despite a number of areas available to you, you weren't happy driving on the grass... Potential future guests, please see our other reviews (on Rankers and Campermate) and photo's of our special spot :)
Very nice people and beautiful place in a calm area to stay. Right next to the stone beach. We stayed there for one night, and because the Café was closed that day they offered us self made pizza for a good price. We will definitely come back here again.
Great place for non powered sites. The food at the cafe was excellent, the staff were friendly and fun, the sites were secluded and a few minutes from the beach. They had great shower rooms that let you have some privacy. You'll fight off a few sand flies, but enjoy the view and cafe (great wifi)!
My favourite spot. Beautiful location. Very friendly people who knew every walking track within about 100km. Very cosy place, bushes to hide the van for those who like to be private. Best walks in New Zealand along the beautiful beach.
Great spot, great location, friendly staff, good price. Best campsite so far.
Really pleasant and welcoming place with family style facilities. Price was higher than the this site advises @ $12each . Hedged sites help with privacy.

Our favourite place of the whole tour – a bit of heaven. Total relaxation beside a long (stony) beach with loads of driftwood for beach fires, a river to the side and bush in the background, and clear night skies. Free access to charger outlets and wi-fi in the café, although no power hook-ups. Very welcoming and continued friendliness and plenty of opportunities in surrounding areas to be more active. Café (few outside visitors when we were there) had a great range of fresh food and relaxing atmosphere and campers welcome to use it as a common room – wood fired oven pizza at sunset was magic. Flexible camp locations with many facilities, all well-kept, including campfire locations on site. Located north bank of Mokihinui River (we first called at site south of river by mistake).
[2 senior Scots, 4 week trip, mainly overnight stops, self-contained, Autumn]
Nice camping with family feeling. Very nice cafe and very friendly son of the owner and his girlfriend. Nice beach.
We visited this place due to the previous 2 reviews and it is all they say it is. Had a ripping big open fire which was superb, great location, VERY cheeky wekas ( smashed a full wine glass) I would come here again and highly recommend this to everyone travelling in the area
What a little gem of a place beside the Mokihinui River mouth.
The grounds are well laid out and beautifully kept. There is a funky cafe area to dine in and watch the cheeky Wekas in the garden. There is also good fishing for the fishos when the sea is calm, remember it is a West Coast location that offen has very rough sea conditions
Great Beach lots of firewood, BBQ on campground with firewood, great homemade pies, very relaxed, great fishing spot.
