I’ve stayed in a tent, powered site and a house at Gentle Annie - but no matter the level of your accommodation, the kindness & genuineness of the service is the same.
The staff work so hard but are
always friendly & real.
Not to mention the most amazing massage, river-side sauna & beautiful coffee. The ideal break & location.

It was the most beautiful campsite I’ve been to in New Zealand.
There were both the ocean and lakes nearby. Some people were fishing for whitebait. There was a big common area (like a café or living room), which I used for charging my devices and reading books. The toilets and kitchen were clean, but the kitchen didn’t have any cooking tools. The shower cost $2, and I paid $19 per night for an unpowered site.

Gentle Annie is the most beautiful majestic camp ground I have ever visited.
The facilities are always spotless. There is so much to do, including walks on the beach, through the bush and to the maze. The cafe serves the best coffees and delicious home baking, made with love from the Lovely Caroline.
Thank you Gentle Annie ❤️

Our favourite campground this year by far!
Friendly people, great facilities, great location, good coffee, pizza oven, wifi (only works in the kitchen area), dump site, water. Also there is a nice shop and some merch for sale and lots of advice on local walks.

Great internet and cellphone reception everywhere in the camp, free wifi at the cafe, very friendly and helpful staff, nice walks on site, beautiful showers well worth the $2!
Gorgeous views and heaps of fish to catch! Our son caught a kawhai every night and we caught gurnard and snapper on the kayak. Highly recommend! The road is beautifully kept, take it slow and leave before 12 and you ll be fine.

Just the perfect place to spend Christmas, we had a wonderful stay at Gentle Annie, as always!
There are so many great spots to pitch the tent, the facilities are beautifully maintained and clean and the Cowshed Café is just awesome. Expertly made coffee, tempting baking and somehow there’s always a table however busy the campsite is. I love that we can use the café as a place to relax, share a family meal and play a board game, which is the perfect entertainment on the rainy days. Then when the sun is out there’s loads to explore nearby. This year we drove up to Karamea to do the Ōpārara walks, quite a long way but well worth it for the drive itself and then the stunning bush walk. We also E-cycled up to the first hut on the Old Ghost Road which again was stunning, such a beautiful part of the world.
Thanks again to all the cheerful friendly staff at Gentle Annie and well done to Jess, Jessie and whanau for creating The Best Campsite in NZ 😍👏

What an absolute gem of a place to stay.
We stayed in one of the houses Cabbage Tree so private and right across from the beach. We went their to relax and that's exactly what we did. Everything was well explained in the email for arrival and that was that! So simple and easy. Thanks so much for having us. Great way to spend my birthday!!

May favourite location and campsite in NZ yet.
With the best facilities by far. A whole Caffe lounge to relax in out the rain all night if necessary. Multiple fire places and great internet!
The location is also stunning with amazing nearby walking a biking routes though the jungle and over the cliffs. With some beautiful quiet beaches too!

This campsite was recommended by several people & we certainly will be doing the same.
So clean, so friendly & a little bit different which we love!
Really cool shower / toilet block. Accessible to lots of bike rides & walks. Definitely be back.

Unfortunately we were disappointed.
Overrated especially if on a power site. Base rate ok but the extra $ asked for disposal of black water, expensive driers and showers plus being asked to take away your own recycling and rubbish was unexpected. These services are what we pay for. Also no oven.

Wow !
This camp is absolutely stunning and can understand why it’s rated as one of the top places to stay in NZ.
Love the outdoor showers and showering under the clear night sky! There’s also the Cow Shed Cafe with super friendly staff, excellent coffee and delicious home baked muffins, along with many other treats to enjoy.
Close to mountain bike trails and so many hiking options. Plus the view from the top of the maze is spectacular !
There’s a special relaxed vibe here which makes you want to stay so much longer than just a night !
Thank you Jesse and Jessica

I was only supposed to stay here for 1 night, fell in love with the place and ended up staying for 3.
Such a lovely little campsite, friendly owners and staff in an absolutely beautiful area.

Take your time to visit and chill.

Very clearly among the very best camps.
Very clean and tidy alongside a very welcoming quirkiness.
The wood fired pizza oven and fire pit are such a great way to hang out in the evenings and meet new people.

Such a delight to find this place so tucked away off the main road, but in an incredibly beautiful situation right by the ocean.
We loved it so much we came back the next night in the campervan after a trip to Kohaihai Beach. So many unexpected extra touches, eg the excellent home baking, the awesome coffee, fab new amenities, very helpful host, thank you Jesse.

We have been to so many campgrounds throughout New Zealand and this one is by far the best!
The location is in iconic, unique wild landscape. The approach is comfortable and convenient even for long vehicles.
For fishermen, this place has it all.
For families it is simply a dream.
Several fireplaces as well as a freely available pizza oven, which you can fire yourself with driftwood.
A highlight for our kids was the marshmallow barbecue on the beach.
Family friendly walks are very doable from the campsite.
There is also a small playground where our kids had a lot of fun.
In the lounge / café area it is super cozy and it can easily bridge even a rainy day.
Great new sanitary facilities. The whole campground is lovingly and detailed designed, clean and very well maintained.
The owners are so incredibly friendly and helpful and give you a wealth of tips, so you could certainly spend many days there.
The trip here was so worth it that we will come back here after our South Island circumnavigation!
Small tip: starts the morning with a coffee and a legendary delicious Carrot Cake from the Campground Café

Wow, the location is stunning!
Loved listening to the sound of the ocean at night & exploring the beach by day. The new amenities block is great and always clean. Heaps of activities including the new bike track along the beach, the maze with a view, bush walks, pizza oven, fire pits & playground. We really enjoyed catching up with other campers around the main fire at night. Also biked up to the Old Ghost Rd (only 10kms away) and explored Charming Creek. Easy spot to day trip further north to the Oparara Basin, Kohaihai (Heaphy Track) & Karamea. I've also asked the kids what they thought of Gentle Annie: "It was fun; amazing sunsets; lots to do; enjoyed riding bikes"
