There are two sites to camp on Okahu Road, the road end and the larger mid-Okahu camp (formerly known as Grader Camp), they are about 7km apart from each other. Camp on grass terraces adjacent to Okahu Stream. The area's kahikatea trees were extensively logged in the past in the past and podocarps are now regenerating. Good picnicking and walking in the forest
Be aware that kaitiaki Ngāti Whare have invoked a rāhui over their tribal boundaries, this includes Whirinaki Te Pua a Tāne Conservation Park.

The campsites here are pretty remote. The road is a little over 10k in total with the first camp at about 3k and the second at the end of the road. From there a series of trails lead through a beautiful forest. There is also a DOC hut with 12 bunks about halfway down the road. We were there in Autumn '15 and the road was pretty bad in spots with lots of potholes and ruts cut out by water runoff. I would not drive a campervan down this road in the condition it was in. If you have 4WD or a truck with clearance and decent tyres you should be fine and will likely have the place to yourself. We also attempted the area trails via River Road and found evidence of several busted windows in the bushes. It might be best to approach the area from the southern trailhead and campgrounds.
Each camping location is approved by a regional council in NZ. So if it shows on the map, you’re allowed to stay.

Awesome location, next to a river with many places to set up camp. However, there was an absurd number of flies. We are used to fair amounts of them, but this was ridiculous. We made the mistake to keep our van open for a while and had to kill approx 60 flies before we could go to bed. Just too much.

Remote camping area where you could be the only person there. Road in was very rough and slippery so would pay to check at DOC office in Murupara the road conditions if you have a 2wd vehicle.
Great fishing and walking opportunities

Good campground and a super place for fly-fishing.
