Although Queenstown and all the bustle is only a short drive away, you would never know it up here. Typical pointed schist hills, a few sheep and a tranquil lake.
The access road is narrow and not recommended in spring or winter conditions.
From Queenstown follow the Glenorchy Road for 6 km from the Fernhill roundabout and turn right into Moke Lake Road. This becomes unsealed, passes Lake Kirkpatrick and crosses several cattle stops as it enters the land of Ben Lomond Station. It is narrow and not recommended in spring or winter conditions.
The track is signposted 1 km from before the campground, but it is better to park at the campground and start from there. Follow the road to the signpost, cross the stile and follow the boardwalks. The track is easy to see on the far side of the lake. After about 20 minutes you can take a short detour to the snout in the lake, with a nice stand of beech forest.
The views on the way round take in the Williamson spur to the east, the flats of Moke Creek, which winds around Ben Lomond (hidden from view). The pinnacle of Bob’s Peak is the centrepiece.
Moke Lake occupies a hollow in the upper terraces above the main Wakatipu glaciers.
The area was used in Jane Campion’s TV drama Top of the Lake.

Calm lake surrounded by mini alps reminding me of my hometown. Watching the local shepherd working on their sheep with dogs was my first exciting experience and worth my time to wait and watch.

Paradise! A small lake with nothing around, just mountains, fields and the lake. You can walk around it or ride your bike, it is the most peaceful place ever.
