Murphy’s Holiday Camp is a nostalgic kiwi experience.
The iconic kiwi holiday that so many of us remember has become an endangered pastime. Beachside camping grounds are now few and far between. Murphy’s Holiday Camp holds strongly to the camping style we know and love. A place for families to create memories for the future.
After more than 50 years and now in its third generation, Murphy’s Holiday Camp is still proudly owned and operated by the same family who started this holiday spot way back in 1965.
Murphy’s Holiday Camp is situated on State Highway 2 midway between Te Puke and Whakatane.
Murphy's Camp is sheltered to the south by majestic cliffs and bordered to the north by the Pacific Ocean. It is set amongst mature trees and boasts absolute beachfront along 1 kilometre of coastline.
Matata is the closest settlement to Murphy’s, just 2 kilometres away.
Whakatane is a beautiful bustling township just 20 minutes drive away, a great place to have a coffee or do a spot of shopping.
Views – Right on the beachfront, 180 degree panoramic views of Rurima (Turtle Island), Motuhora (Whale), and Whakaari (White Island) – New Zealand’s most active volcano. An uninterrupted white sandy beach stretches more than 10 kilometres, great for walking or a spot of sunbathing.
Fishing – Good fishing off the beach whether surfcaster, kayak or contiki. The most common catches for the area are Snapper, Kahawai, Gurnard and Travelly.
Swimming – All tide swimming. Sand bar allows children to splash about in the shallows, while producing good waves for any keen surfers.
8 tourist cabins and 1 tourist flat are available for casual use, each individual and expressing their own style. They are randomly scattered about the camp – not crammed beside one another.

Great for beach walks, fishing and surfing. Everything is kept so clean and tidy, especially the kitchens, toilets and showers. A big thank you to the owners.

This place is a new fav!
Hands down one of the best camping spots ever! The price for what you get is incredible! All other reviews raved on about the immaculate facilities and they were ALL true!! Top quality location, top quality facilities! And the fact that the showers are hot and unmetered is almost unheard of these days so that was epic! First time at this place and definitely not the last! Managers were so chilled and easy going, just the whole experience was awesome! Yea the train is loud at night but all the other awesome things makes that one thing very insignificant! LOVED our stay and can’t WAIT to go back!

A great place to stay.
Extremely clean and everyone is so nice. Was able to get a last minute booking due to a cancellation. Was so happy as we had the cabin right in front of the playground for our daughter and beach access was in front of the playground. Would absolutely recommend going here

Lovely beach site.
We stayed here for two nights and felt very comfortable. Powered sites are one step from the beach which is also very nice for taking a walk or catch some fish for dinner.
Friendly staff, kitchen and bathroom very clean. Seems as if the showers get cleaned up few times a day, which I think is absolutely positive. We loved it here and totally recommend this place.

10 plus for the location right at the beach!!!!
The camp ground is rather small and a lot of permanent campers. But the hosts and location are nice. We had a pitch in the first row, just the dunes where between us and the beach. Amazing. Once we had arrived our son immediately jumped on the beach and started to play. Pay attention: the waves are strong. Good for surfing, not for swimming (at least in April). The facilities as kitchen, bathroom is old fashioned but clean. If you like a beautiful spot and friendly people that's the right place to stay. Btw, a powered site is much cheaper than any other motorcamp in Whakatane till Matata we had checked before.

What a delightful place to stay.
What a delightful place to stay. My wife and I were looking for a camp by the sea and did not have a reservation but tried our luck on the Saturday of Auckland Anniversary weekend. When we rang they said they were full- - - but they could fit us in somewhere. Very polite on the phone and very friendly when we arrived from Waihi. A really great two night stay at this family orientated camp. Thanks for a great weekend, we will definitely be back.
P.S. The big freight trains that roar past at odd times add to the character to this otherwise serene camp.

Fantastic campground..
Awesome CLEAN facilities, great kitchen, and fridge and freezer! includes plenty of WATER for hot showers, even washing your vehicles/trailer/ATVs/boat, place to clean your fish, etc. Lovely QUIET campground with respectful campers, plenty of SHADE. Sign at the gate says REAL COFFEE HERE, and avocados. Does it get any better. Just a 5min drive to Matata shops if you need.. Great beach. Oh and last but not least, DOGS ALLOWED!! Love Murphys.. You will too.
