Mike, the owner operator has run a tight ship here since he bought Cathedral Cove Kayaks over 20 years ago. Kayaking to Cathedral Cove is way better than the walk.
As an ex kayak guide myself, here’s how I’d approach these tours.
Go as early as possible. They offer a 5.30am Sunrise tour in Dec / Jan. That’s the best time to be on the water. If not, the 8.45am tour during other summer months is definitely the one.
It's an amazing coast. Short and sweet. Being a compact area, it really suits families and those that want to try kayaking at a premier kayaking location.
If you’re looking for a longer paddle, other sea kayaking locations around NZ offer more coastline to explore.
And don’t be put off if it’s the cooler months, it’s way less crowded and if the weather is settled then I almost prefer it then.

Very nice way to spend your time on the Coromandel Peninsula.
A 3.5 hour kayak tour at Cathedral Cove with a wonderful break with coffee at the beach. Quite pricey though.

We rented kayaks and went by ourselves to Cathedral Cove.
Great views, and even dolphins.

It is a good option to take the kayak instead of walking. Nice viewing and a good experience.

Nice and experienced guide. I felt a bit sick because the sea was very rough when we did it.

Brilliant fun and informative trip out on the sea.
Staff really friendly and our guide really knew what he was talking about when giving us a tour of the area. Plus the hot drinks on the beach were very impressive, considering he made them on the beach. Definitly worth the money

We did the morning kayak to the cove with our daughters aged 8 and 6 (as passengers, mostly).
All the gear, great guide, beautiful place. Capuccino on the beach. Paddled into a sea cave. On the way back, our group rafted together while the guide told us stories of the Maori and European history in the area. Then we hoisted a makeshift sail to try to catch the wind back. Posted photos for us to download from Facebook. Highly recommended.

Friendly, knowledgable guide who let us explore while keeping an eye on us in the swells. Also great that staff let me join the trip even though I was late!

We did an afternoon trip to Cathedral Cove, there were 4 in our group with 1 guide.
The coffee on the beach were great and there was the right amount of time to wander through the cove before heading back out on the water. It was good to get out further in the open water and circumnavigate one of the islands. If you were a stronger/experienced kayaker you might have not got your fill but for the average punter there was about the right amount of paddling.

What a day!
I did the full day tour and was glad I made the extra effort. 6hrs of laid-back paddling, exploring inside sea caves and tunnels in the morning and the clear waters of the marine reserve in the afternoon - it was great seeing the difference between the two parts of coastline. If you're thinking about a trip, do the full day. Unforgetable!
