We planned a much anticipated 3 week trip around the South Island and after much time researching other campervan companies, we decided to book with Kia Ora Campers, mostly due to the very positive reviews. From the time Steve picked us up from our hotel to the very hasty vehicle return (due to the impending Covid19 lockdown), we were not disappointed. We hired the 3 berth Mercedes Nomad which we found to be really comfortable; it has all the daily essentials you need in a campervan and is very easy to drive around and manoeuvre when parking in town. Great to have the BBQ and table and chairs...on those beautiful sunny days, nothing better than sitting outside and enjoying magnificent views of lakes and mountains! Even during a very chilly 3degrees overnight stay in Arthur’s Pass National Park, we were comfortably warm throughout the night. On the odd occasion we needed to ask Steve a question, he was always available and happy to take our call...great customer service. If we plan a trip around the North Island in the future, we will not hesitate to book again with Kia Ora Campers. Would highly recommend for their quality vehicle and amazing service.
Thanks again Steve and Vicky.

They took a lot of time to get us accustomed to our camper, which was in excellent condition, with 0 waiting time for pickup. Also they supported us superbly upfront and during our stay in NZ.

We hired from Steve and Vicky at Kia Ora Campers for a three week trip in 2020 coming over from UK.
Correspondence was easy as was the interaction between us and Steve discussing prices and he matched the best price we had as well as including camping chairs, table and BBQ.
Easy pick up and Steve explained things to us as well as showing us the instructional videos. We had hired in UK before so a.good reminder, if you have not hired a campervan before it is best to view these a few times before setting out as there is a procedure to follow and a lot of info at one time.
We hired a 4 berth campervan with lots of space and it paid off for us to enjoy views from the large.picture window in rear, indeed this was our favourite sitting position at campsites and viewpoints for a coffee.
The campervan was relatively easy to drive but it was large to park up in some car parks. We had a problem with leisure battery which had just been changed but this was sorted by the engineer who explained that a safety cut off was set too high and no problem after this (Thanks Steve for prompt response and repair)
Found Steve and Vicky really good to deal with, the van was clean and in good repair, they gave us their good advice and even ran us to airport himself. Thanks Steve and Vicky.

We were picked up from the airport and after 5 minutes drive we arrived to Kia Ora Campers pickup .
We have booked the Camper van for 3 people even though we were 2 adults - we received it upon arrival immediately with clear instructions how to use .
What a great service - we were given instructions and travel advice and a place where we could put in storage 2 big suitcases so we won't need to travel with them.

the Camper van was as good as new - very very clean - everything was in place - all kitchen equipment was clean - every thing looked as it was new.

I would highly recommend Kia Ora Campers - funny thing is that I have spent almost 2 weeks of choosing a company and I chose Kia ora because of the quick replays and the
really good price - and I mean really good price !

After receiving their price offer I was in shock of all other offer that I have received ( around 1000 Eur difference for 21 days ) .

after having the experience with Kia Ora Campers I could say that I am very glad of choosing this company .

don't think twice ...

This was our second trip from the UK to New Zealand. Last time we hired a motorhome from one of the big companies but weren't very impressed with the quality, so searched more thoroughly this time. Kia Ora Campers had really good reviews so we went with them and were not disappointed. The camper was a very good conversion with everything you could need and very well kitted out. All the handbooks for the appliances were there, although inevitably when we wanted to turn the fridge down the handbook referred to every model except ours! However a quick email to Vicki sorted out the problem.
On one campsite we were looking at our grey (waste) water outlet pipe as we'd lost a bit of it somehow and a man came up who was also camping and said he worked part time for Kia Ora and could he help? He fitted a new part wile we were there, so thank you Brian. If we come again, we will definitely use Kia Ora again, many thanks team.

We absolutely loved our camper from Kia Ora. The welcome from Steve was brilliant. He made the pick up so relaxed and easy and we were quickly on our way. The extras like camp chairs and towels and washing up liquid etc all helped make it a great experience. Steve and Vicky were easy to contact and helpful whenever required.... not that we needed much help as all the info we needed was included in the van. We would love to return to NZ and would definitely head straight back to Kia Ora and rent the van for even longer..... we didn't want to hand it back after 3 lovely weeks.

The car was in a perfect shape, we had never issues through the whole journey and in case we needed support both helped us out immediately! More power, more features, bigger bathroom, entertainment system and also the little things were better we had every utensil you could need, good quality camping chairs and table, tools, washing line etc. etc. Every email we sent to Steve and Vicky was replied to within hours and always a friendly and helpful answer.

It was our very first campervan road trip and Kia Ora campers made it a very successful one! We had a 4 Berth Merc Cascade for 15 days and loved the layout, the panoramic windows (meaning we could dine with a view almost every day) and the freedom of self-contained camping! The van came with all the necessary equipment, tools and portable tables/chairs. Linen and towels provided were clean and fresh-smelling (my kid who has multiple allergies has no complains) I appreciated that the quilts were thick and comfy and kept us warm on those cold nights at Mt Cook National Park! At pick-up, we were quite apprehensive when the guy who attended to us did not seem too familiar with the camper and he says he was not from the company! However, we quickly figured out how everything worked and Steve replies WhatsApp msgs very quickly too. Other companies we researched charged a sizeable extra for additional items which Kia Ora included in the rental. Only peeve was that the GPS was grossly outdated and gave crappy directions. We had to use our data for Goggle maps which was certainly most updated! All in all, I would certainly rent from them again, perhaps on my next trip to North island!

We rented an older VW Crafter 2 berth for 6 weeks (pick up in CC and drop off in Auckland) and found the space sufficient for 2 ppl although I would recommend you bring collapsible luggage so it can be stored and not have to be moved every time you make up the bed. We chose Kia Ora more on the basis of good reviews and they did not disappoint. They threw in many extras which you have to pay for with other companies.... gps, bbq, outdoor table, lawn chairs, awning. They also added bicycles due to our long rental period which we loved! The solar panels helped tremendously in extending our "non electrical" night options.
We did have a break down on South Island but the service Steve and Vicky provided was tremendous, paying for a rental car and putting us up in very nice accommodations while we waited for a vehicle part. We did not have to sleep in our campervan in the garage parking lot as according to the garage owner, some companies make you do. Yes, it changed our schedule as we were on our way to the North Island the next day but we had the rental car within 1/2 hr of arriving at the garage and on we went. Vicky asked us where we wanted to go in the next few days and she arranged our rooms accordingly. She rebooked our North Island ferry ride and paid the difference for cancelling and rebooking. For the inconvenience, they also didn't charge us for the diesel tax.
When you travel a lot you realize that no vacation will be completely perfect and if you have a positive attitude and go with the flow, you can turn most things into a positive experience. It turns out we saw many fantastic sights that we would've missed if we hadn't had the breakdown as these areas were not on our original itinerary. Airpark Canterbury drop off only took a few mins with an immediate ride to the airport included. I can't say enough about the good, prompt communication we had with Vicky on the entire journey.... we were treated like Gold! Thank you from Bob & Jan

We rented 3 different motorhomes from Kia Ora for 2 trips totaling 5 weeks. As we'd had no experience with motorhomes we researched extensively, drawing up comparison charts of prices, insurance policies, features of the vehicles and their add-ons and of course read all the Rankers reviews. We settled on Kia Ora as they rated well in several of the categories. We were delighted with our choice and would recommend them highly, in particular because you are dealing directly with the owners of your motorhome, Vicky and Steve. Throughout the booking process they were informative, friendly and very helpful with general advice we needed. At various times we communicated by phone, email and text and always found them to be prompt and thorough and their processes to be efficient and streamlined. We think there was more opportunity for flexibilty with dates and pick up and drop off sites when dealing directly with a smaller company.
We picked up 2 of the vans from Christchurch Airport with the handover done by staff of Airpark Canterbury, both of whom were very competent. The shuttle collected us within minutes of our call on landing.
We never had a single mechanical issue with all 3 vehicles, they drove very well and it was easy to see they were very well maintained. I was impressed by their cleanliness and fresh odour which was not the case with the fridges and mattresses of the more expensive vans we checked out at one of the larger companies (research for future group). On our travels we talked to other motorhome renters, some of whom were discontented and were envious of our vehicle at a similar price but more so of our ability to contact our owners 24/7 should we need to.
We were so impressed with our experience (and NZ!) that within a week we rebooked with Kia Ora. Due to a health condition I had purchased a pillow for the first hire, leaving it behind on purpose. It was waiting for me in the new motorhome some months later, having been stored by Vicky!

We have rented a large 6-berth VW camper at Kia Ora with our 2 children for a full 3 months (Jan-April), after various offers from large providers did not convince us. The contact with Vicky and Steve was very straightforward and personal right from the start. The offered value for money also spoke for a booking. Kindly, Vicky also provided us with free bicycles and various other items due to the long rental period. The takeover in Christchurch was very straightforward and we were very happy with our vehicle. Very clean and everything worked, although the vehicle was a bit older (which we knew). The decor was meticulously maintained and not just equipped with the essentials. With Britz and the other big companies you have to buy a lot of additionals, which Kia Ora simply has provided from the start. For minor problems, Steve was easily available and very accommodating (replacement lights, chairs, etc.). We had no additional costs and also an extension of the rent was without any problems and with very attractive price indeed. We can highly recommend Kia Ora if you value personal contact and would like to directly support Kiwi people and not big companies. At Kia Ora you are in perfect hands. We will hopefully come back sometime!

The 6 passenger Volkswagon Camper van we rented in March 2019 was better than we hoped. Since it is a 2011 year model we expected it to exhibit more wear and tear (renter abuse) than what we encountered. With 23300 kilometers on the odometer it was not show room new but was in great repair, tidy and performed well. A couple of the cabinet door latches would not cooperate and a plastic clip intended to hold a broom handle was broken. The propane house heater worked like a champ on some of the chilly mornings. The 2.2 liter turbo diesel and 6 speed automatic transmission hauled us up and down the mountains without a problem. The best thing about Kia Ora Campervans are Steve and Vicki Paul, the owners. We had occasion to stop by a camper van store that is also the rental center for some of the "Big Name" rental companies. They have a waiting lounge that had over a dozen people trying to get their vehicles. A shuttle picked us up at the airport, took us to a car park where our camper van and Steve were waiting for us. Steve gave us a through orientation, advised us where to a small shopping center to get provisions and lunch. He then had us follow him to the shopping center where by chance we encountered him again at the restaurant he recommended. We asked him to joined us for lunch and he graciously accepted. During lunch we peppered him with questions about points of interest. He was a wealth of information and added greatly to the overall experience. "Good on You" Kia Ora.

The van was good value for the price. There was a company rep who conducted the briefing of features of the van. He did not cover two specific issues. For example, I was shown the water inlet port and told to just fill the tank until it overflows. He failed to mention that there was a valve which requires the hose to be inserted past it to fill the tank. So my early attempts to fill the tank gave me the impression that it was full as water just gushed out. It wasn't until I ran out of water that I had to work that one out. The rep also showed me the waste water outlet drain, cap and valve and said that it was just a matter of connecting up the waste hose and allowing that to drain. Did that a couple of times without much results, so though that perhaps the water drained into the sewer cassette - which I cleared every other day. It wasn't until the shower failed to drain that I realised that there must be a blockage in the system. I prodded around with a metal coat hanger to attempt to clear that and out gushed the waste water, with what appeared to be tea leaves and other gunk from a previous renter - my partner and I drink tea from tea bags. Steve, the proprietor, was generally helpful when I rang him about these problems.

The negative points:
KIA ORA CAMPERS does not manage its vehicles directly, but passes through service companies (during delivery and upon return). KIA ORA was to pick us up at our guesthouse to take us to the delivery place, but after some difficult explanations (we do not speak English very well, especially on the phone), we took a taxi (refunded). When delivering the camping car nobody could explain how the vehicle worked (gearbox and engine start, in particular), which was different from a French model. During heavy rain, our camper took the water from the roof (skylight and air conditioner) = we had to put tape with a plastic film under the skylight, because the water ran on our bed ... The answer of KIA ORA was telling us to fold our bed, but did not tell us how it was when it was raining at night!
The camping chairs were the worst we've seen during our trip to the other rental companies, and we did not dare to move, as they were so fragile.
The equipment for camping was really reduced, even for 2 people: 2 glasses, 2 cups, 2 bowls, 2 plastic boxes, 1 kitchen knife (broken), no colander, no toilet brush, ...

The positive points:
The vehicle was 240,000km, but worked very well.

Reviewed over 1 year ago

Kia Ora Campers responds:

Thanks for your feedback Jean , although a little harsh.
As owners of Kia Ora Campers we do manage our campers directly but we can't be everywhere unfortunately .
For a start we ordered 2 taxis , that you missed so with the language barrier we got you to get one yourself , that cost us over $100 .
The camper was explained VERY well but because you couldn't speak any english some things may have been missed . i.e. Having your foot on the brake whilst putting into drive , which i would think is compulsory in all auto's.
And after driving it already would have learnt .
Regarding the camp chairs we don't charge for them and if they break we ask you to replace them and we pay for that, larger moire expensive ones take up to much room
also at no cost you got a GPS, camp table, toilet chemical and portable bbq.
as a 2-berth they are set out for 2 of everything so why would you expect more as space is always an issue for equipment.

We are proud to say that we are 100% contactable without have to go to options and getting sent to voice mail.

On our second trip to New Zealand in 2018, I was looking for a camper that lived up to our expectations, after not having had such a good experience on our first trip with MAUI. Kia Ora Camper as a family business came to the right place, as we believe that a family business thinks and acts differently than a group like the THL Group, to which MAUI has been a member for some time.
Our questions were answered promptly by Vicky and Steve and we booked the camper with you.
After our arrival in Christchurch we were, as agreed, picked up at the airport and the transfer took place quickly and very important UNCOMPLICATED !!!
After about 1 hour we could start already. Everything went well and we had a fantastic journey with unforgettable moments and breathtaking views. Even the return was quick and uncomplicated.

I deliberately write my statements in German, as I miss in this forum German reports so far.

Many thanks to Vicky and Steve for these memorable weeks, even though we did not meet in person, I can only recommend these companies. If we travel again in 3-4 years to this beautiful country, we will certainly be renewed with Vicky and Steve book a camper.

My experience is a three weeks period just before Christmas 2018 that I have spent travelling through NZ with my wife for our honeymoon. Our campervan was the 2018 Freedom. We chose Kia Ora, despite being a small and unknown brand, for the positive reviews we read all over this site. I have to say this was my first experience in a campervan and probably I should have chosen a bigger van cause the Kia Ora Freedom 2018 turned out being quite uncomfortable. The van itself was quite new and, on the paper, it had all the right features: self contained with toilet and shower, microwave, solar panels, rear camera etc. As per our experience: the van was not ready when we arrived at the rental location and we had to wait for almost two hours while it was cleaned and prepped. The owner kindly brought us to the nearest supermarket and we spared some of that wait doing our groceries. Living in the van has not been easy, it had a number of small issues like the heating system refusing to work sometimes or the toilet flush that wouldn't stop after the button was depressed but most of those things would solve themselves quite easily in short time and Steve was always available on the phone to help. Another bad point of the campervan was the fresh water and grey water tanks size, definitely too small to stay 3 days off the grid as well as the absence of a garbage bin with a lid. Also, the van only had fixed side window and none equipped with a flyscreen therefore we only could use a small roof vent that had a net fitted on it. Last but not least it had very limited storage space and every time we had to pickup something like table and chairs we had to undo the bed, not practical at all. Overall I'd say we paid quite a high price for what we had got (250$/day over 3 weeks) and now with hindsight I would get something slightly bigger for a small difference in price or something much smaller if I had to save money.

We had a great holiday in the Kea Breeze campervan that we rented from Kiaora. We travelled right round the SoutH Island, without incident. We had a couple of queries - not related to any problems with the van, which Steve was able to assist us with very promptly. Would not hesitate to use Kiaora again, or recommend them to others. Many things with them were included, such as table, chairs, BBQ, GPS, reversing camera, with other companies these are often extras. Only tip? Chose a van significantly bigger than you think you might need, and remember you have to stow luggage somewhere, so collapsible versions are better!

Couldn't ask for a better company to do business with. Vicky and Steve are very helpful and accommodating. Hired a VW 6 berth for 12 days and although it was 7 years old was still in good condition and drove well. We covered 2000+km all over the South Island without any real problems, it was understandably working hard up some of the mountain roads and had a little auto gear change lag. Beds were comfortable and camper was well equipped. Had the vehicle delivered to Queenstown, where we were met on time and had a full and clear briefing, and picked from Picton where again everything went smoothly with everything done to accommodate our wishes. I would fully recommend Kia Ora Campers to anyone who wants personal, competent and accommodating service from people who can't do enough for you. Thank you for a brilliant holiday.

We hired a 2 Berth 2018 Kia Ora Freedom van. It is a large Ford transit van, so it is small enough to park easily in town and cope with the bends and bumps of the New Zealand roads. Having spoken to another couple who had hired a larger motorhome and were wary about driving it along some of the roads in NZ, I am glad we had not gone for a bigger van.

The camper offers a certain level of comfort with a fridge, hob, heater, shower and toilet. Plus you can walk from the driver seat to the back of van without getting out of the vehicle -very useful when raining.

Kia Ora include many items that are extras with other companies, such as Sat Nav, camper chairs and a BBQ.

By design, that the microware and plug sockets only work when the power is connected to an external supply. But there are usb ports you can use to charge your phone and tablet, off power. We camped for 4 nights in a row without connecting to power, and if I read the meter correctly, could have camped for at least another night, as the battery is topped up by a solar panel and the engine.

Early on we had a couple of other minor issues which were resolved quickly over the phone. Later on in our trip we noticed could not get hot water in the shower - but it worked in the sink. We only noticed it halfway during our trip and it was a few days after that I reported it to Kia Ora. I have not docked a star for this as we reported it quite late in the holiday and at the time said we weren't too bothered about this.

Everything else met our expectations and we found the camper comfortable. We found our dealings with Kia Ora very fair.

The other bits of advice I would give to people hiring this van are:
Beware that the south island has limited mobile phone coverage, particularly in campsites outside of towns and even in places such as Milford Sound.
Ensure at least one of you bags can be folded flat. We had 2x60 litres bags and just managed to store our belongings in the cupboards.

We hired a camper for just over 7 weeks. It was a Ford Transit, so fairly small but perfect for our needs. It was fully self-contained with shower and toilet. It was comfortable. It was easy to drive and easy to park. We appreciated the gas heater and the extra gas bbq. Also the safe was useful to lock valuables away.
They supplied it with plenty of towels and lots of bedding.
We found we never needed to stay in a powered site as the solar panel and battery supplied 12volts or the lights and water pump. We never used to TV or the microwave, electric kettle or toaster. But they are there if you need them.
The only problem was the sliding door leaked when it rained but it didn't wet any of our things just the cupboard that held the sink.

Excellent nearly new van. Well maintained and clean throughout. Two of us booked a 4 berth as we wanted plenty of space. Even though the van was large it dealt well with even steepest and windiest roads in South Island. Heater was required a couple of nights and did a great job. Steve and Vicky were easy to deal with before and during the hire. Would definitely recommend.

My husband and I booked a month’s campervan hire with this company for February 2018 on the basis of glowing reviews, and friendly, helpful email exchanges with the owners. During these exchanges the detailed spec. for the van was confirmed, along with the statement ‘our campervans are all nice and modern’. What a mis-representation!

We had problems from the start, changed vans after three days and the problems continued, basically because the vehicles were too old (10 years) with excessively high mileage (>270,000/280,000 km). They were not fit for purpose.

Problems included:

Procedural

1. Poor pick-up and drop-off at third party carpark with no-one from Kia Ora present
2. Sloppy and inadequate paperwork.

Mechanical

1. Both gear boxes faulty (confirmed on second vehicle by local VW agent)
2. Poor brakes
3. Engine losing power on inclines
4. Faulty passenger door

Safety

1. Gas leak and poorly maintained burners
2. Fire extinguisher needing recharge
3. Faulty connector on 240V hook-up (replaced by us and not reimbursed)

Living

1. Habitation battery barely able to hold charge despite solar panel
2. Extractor fan not working and faulty roof ventilator
3. Booked awning missing (subsequently fitted - Day 10)

Hygiene

1. Sink blocked with foul-smelling food from previous use
2. Mice infestation, apparently through hole in floor of cupboard which had been patched up with cardboard!
3. Generally grubby and in need of a good clean

The company tried unsuccessfully to overcome some problems by email, and did offer yet another different vehicle. But in the end, having lost all confidence, we gave up complaining in the interest of getting through our holiday without more upset. We sent a detailed complaint afterwards and have been offered no recompense other than waiving the NZ diesel road tax.

Reviewed about 2 years ago and experienced in February 2018

Kia Ora Campers responds:

Procedural
If we personal don’t meet clients on pick up and return then our contracted staff at Airpark Canterbury our depot in Christchurch do.
The paperwork side we have no one ever complained about this as it is fast and comphrensive and they get a contract copy as well

Mechanical
Out of the 9 other hires prior in both of the vans he used not one person ever complained about the gear boxes being faulty, poor brakes and he never complained to us about a passenger door (this is the first we heard of this. One of these has since been sold and it never failed a Certificate of Fitness at VINZ for anything.
We swapped vans as he thought the first one had a sticky gearbox and within 10 minutes of taking the second identical van from here he had jammed the gears in this one also.

Safety
Burners can play up in any age van and it’s an easy fix,

Hygiene
I personally pride myself on clean vans and our company in Christchurch have a team of 3 which work on vans there and as for the one he got here my cleaner and myself just finished spending 2 ½ hours on cleaning the inside. The “patched cardboard” is to stop dust getting into the cupboard which doesn’t allow mice to get in as it still opens to the inside step not outside. And of course the sinks can get blocked , depending what you put down them .

From the outset we knew this hire was going to be challenging because his attitude was negative .
When he booked he specified a manual and he knew the age of it as it was on our website with full pictures.
At the end of the day he ordered a more economy van and got at economy rates. Some people you just can't please.
Yes they did have a couple of problems so therefore as reimbursement we never on charged the NZ diesel road tax which was around $176.00.

This was our first camper van experience which we thoroughly enjoyed. The customer service was excellent from the time we booked to the camper until we returned it. Steve was always available to respond to our calls and solve our problems ( mainly because we hadn't taken everything in when briefed before we set off), We had everything we needed for the trip. towels, bedding, table and chairs, barbecue ( a great piece of kit) but we could have done with a few more pieces of crockery and a bit more storage. We had a 2 berth transit van which was easy to drive and park. However, although the van was well equipped and comfortable we found it a bit on the small side for us. This is not a criticism but just something to consider when choosing your van. We need just a bit more space to get around the van and store some of our stuff ( the barbecue and chairs filled up the storage space). We also felt that we would have found sleeping bags more convenient than having to make up the bed each night. Just some personal preferences. Would certainly use Kia Ora campers again. Excellent value for money.

Can't fault our rental from Kia Ora Campers! We had an awesome holiday in NZ and it was partly thanks to the campervan we hired from Vicky and Steve. We went for the VW crafter two berth camper and unfortunately the automatic option we originally requested was written off shortly before our holiday. Steve was extremely professional and let us know ASAP, we were able to switch to a manual version of the same van which was no hassle. The van we got was in great condition and worked perfectly, we did close to 3000km in it over the course of the holiday and it handled it like a champ. Everything was as advertised and it was nice to get some of the extras included in the rental that over companies were charging extra for (e.g. sat nav, camping chairs etc.).

Thank you Vicky and Steve for making it a holiday to remember, if we ever need to rent a campervan in NZ again we know who to call!

Kia ora campers (previously G&J campers) were fantastic!!

Vicky & Steve we’re also prompt to answer any queries I had over email and happy to help with extra tips for enjoying our time in NZ. I decided to book the campervan through them because of the good reviews & also as they were a slightly smaller company they were offering more in the price with no additional cost e.g. camping chairs, solar panel, bbq etc which swayed the vote for me.

I’m glad we decided to go with them as we had an excellent experience! We loved our campervan and didn’t want to give it back! My only feedback would be the van we had was getting old so we had a fridge door that was a little tedious to open, nothing a little TLC can’t fix but if you want a new van I’m unsure if they provide these. Overall a great experience & would recommend to anyone!

We recently returned to the UK from our road trip to NZ and have nothing but the highest regard for the company. We did a lot of research before we chose Kia Ora, and not only were they the most competitively-priced but all our initial queries were answered promptly and clearly, thus making the decision to go with them an easy one. On arriving in Christchurch we were picked up from the airport and taken to the depot nearby, where we were shown around the vehicle by Anshul, who was delightfully helpful and patient. The van itself was new (only 25k km), comfortable and economical to run. A couple of examples that illustrate the high level of professionalism the company practises:

1. We had a problem (or thought we had) when we turned up at a holiday park in Dunedin after a couple of days - all the electrics weren't working even though we were hooked up to a mains supply. I checked all the the switches, still nothing, so phoned Steve who, after telling us to check everything, couldn't figure out why there was a problem. So he paid for us to stay in a cabin overnight and arranged for us to take the van round to a local mechanic/engineer in the morning. Just before we left the following day, Steve phoned back and told us to check "the big red knob" again by the rear passengers' seats, which we did and much to our embarrassment, we realised that the switch had been moved to the "Off" position - probably by one of the kids' feet. D'oh! I offered to reimburse Steve, but he refused firmly and was genuinely more relieved that our holiday hadn't been compromised than in being reimbursed.

2. There was some confusion as to where we were to drop off the van in Auckland. We went to the wrong place, so had to drive a few kms to the correct location. As a way of acknowledging this, Steve paid for a cab to take us to our hotel in central Auckland, about 40 minutes away.

Exceptional customer service, have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them.

Steve was helpful when we contacted him about all the issues while we were on the road and we ended up really enjoying the 2nd half of the trip. The issues we encountered with our campervan are listed below:
1. Inadequate instructions on how to use campervan features and no instruction folder provided
2. Smoke detector and water filling cap missing - we waited for these to be rectified before we took the van
3. Fan / demister not working and was a safety issue - repaired on 4th day of trip
4. Hot water system not working - repaired on 5th day of trip
5. Toilet flush not working - we repaired
6. Gas stove main burner reflector shield broken - dangerous and needs repair
7. Window on drivers side of rear cabin leaking - wet mattress on that side
8. Drivers side window switch broken - repairs needed
9. Fire extinguisher indicator on recharge required
10. GPS maps out of date and comprehensive road atlas not in vehicle

The vans were very well equipped and proved very reliable. Vicky & Steve responded very quickly to all our many queries & questions. G and J Campers highly recommended.

We took a 2 Berth Camper from Christchurch to Picton for 2 weeks. Since we did the northern island by car and hotels, we were glad that a return in Picton was possible.
The Campervan was a Mercedes, diesel, automatic, ca. 200.000 km run but perfect maintained, everything was fine and as expected. So the value for money was really good!
The booking process was also easy and fine - nearly too easy and informal for germans ;-) Honestly, at the beginning we were a bit afraid due to the fact, that beside rankers.co.nz I didn't find much feedback regarding G&J Campers. But we are very glad that we choosed to go with these guys.
Beside this, Vicky and Steve (Owner of G&J Campers) were great. If there is something unclear, just give them a call and you'll find a solution real soon.

Planning was easy with Rankers on activities and campsites. Definitely will recommend to others. Just a feedback that if the map for campsite locations is more detailed, that will be awesome!

We can highly recommend this company. We discovered G & J Campers thanks to rankers and the amazing and truly reviews left on the website. Our experience confirms all the good feedback you'll find here. G&J even if a small company compared to the majors provide a service of higher standards. Great communication, quick problem solver, listener to the customer questions. Maybe there are other small companies that can provide a cheaper vehicle but I do not believe they can guarantee the service provided by G&J, they went more above our expectations.
If one day we'll manage to travel again in New Zealand I'll definitely look again for them.
Thanks Steve.

We would highly recommend this smaller company (G & J )as they were spot on when it came to very friendly/efficient service and communications. The VW camper van was clean and worked well. Most
important for me was it be a diesel with auto transmission. We had a great experience touring both islands and avoided the earthquake area on the South island.

I can highly recommend this service! Vicky and Steve do a great job!
When we received our camper everything was as described and in good condition. And compared to the big companies this is a really good deal.
During our trip we had a small issue with the gas stove and got an answer email with a working fix-solution within a few hours - perfect.
Also the use of the "track-hopping service" for the Routeburn Track was not a problem. It was not a big deal to have a thrid driver from track hoppers in our contract.

Use G and J Campers, you wont regret it!

I was struggling to get any positive replies from the smaller, individual, Camper Van company's in NZ, until I came across Rankers. What a truly great result that was. Within 24 hours, I was contacted by a number of company's, some saying they could help and others saying they were full. I received an email from Vicky at G&J Camping, saying that although they could not meet my specific needs, they gave me some options to think about. Vicky could not have been more helpful, talked me through the process, as a virgin camper and they offered me a fantastic deal with a 4 berth camper.

Everything went smoothly and Ross from G&J Campers met us at Auckland Airport and showed us everything we needed to know about the Camper. He understood we were inexperienced and took his time to explain all we needed to know. He is an asset to their team.

We went on our merry way, but within 48 hours disaster struck....we were parked up 30km north of Kiakoura and the Earthquake struck!! We were trapped between two massive landslides, the road was completely torn apart and we had to abandon our Camper Van.....it will be stuck there for at least 3 months. We were helicoptered to safety and taken to Blenheim.

PC Alan Hendrickson called Vicky at G&J Campers for us, to explain the circumstances. I could not believe what happened in the next two hours.

Vicky from G&J called me back, saying that if we wanted, they would arrange for flights from Blenheim back to Christchurch, where they would provide us with an upgraded 6-berth Camper, at no cost at all to ourselves. Steve from G&J then sorted everything for us, booked our flights, arranged for our replacement Camper Van to be delivered to AKL, and after a short break, our Camper Van holiday was back on track.

To say that Vicky and Steve from G&J Campers went beyond the call of duty is nothing short of an understatement.

This is all TRUE.

IF YOU WANT TO DEAL WITH THE BEST CAMPER VAN COMPANY....CALL G&J CAMPING....end of.

We had previously travelled the North Island in a Wilderness Camper so knew it was a style of travel we really enjoyed. A late decision to visit NZ saw us with few options and we were delighted when Vicky and Steve had a van for us.
From the moment we made the booking they were friendly and replied promptly to every query.
The van was spotlessly clean and very well equipped - providing extras like additional towels and dish washing liquid was really helpful.
The solar panels on top and excellent battery system meant we could freedom camp for days on end, which enabled us to keep costs down and stay bush rather than in parks.
At less than 12 months old our van - the 2015 Fiat -had lots of conveniences such as multiple USB ports to recharge devices and a real bathroom We were travelling with my 82 yr old mother in law so that convenience was essential..
Separate bags for grey and freshwater hoses (loads of tap attachments for the dedicated freshwater hose) and crates storing the power cord etc was very professional, as was a folder with every manual for the van
One thing I particularly appreciated was that this company unlike some of the big ones did not demand an exorbitant bond.
Be aware this company is based in the south and if hiring in Auckland you will go through euro campers. The Euro guys were lovely to deal with and super helpful but they need to lift their game regarding what they think are business hours. Charging an additional $80 dollars to pick up or drop off after 11.30 on Saturday is just not fair, particularly as many Australian families arrive mid afternoon on a Saturday.

For us personally our preferred van would have large windows at the rear while this had a permanent bed so didn't offer this but it worked really well. The over cabin bed where my husband and I slept was huge and had good height above.
Mechanically it drove well, no worries heading up steep hills or over bumpy 'stone' roads.

I really recommend this company.

My wife and I did a 3 week trip in NZ, 8 days with a camper in the South Island. We found G&J Campers on the internet and at first were hesitant to rent (hire) from a small local business. The booking must be done with email and phone call. The owners Steve and Vicky were very professional in their communication and everything was straightforward. After a couple of phone calls we decided to work with them. Easy.

Upon our arrival in Christchurch, we called Steve and within a few minutes he was there with the camper, did a 20 minute overview and we were ready to go. He took us to a grocery store parking lot making it easy to get food before hitting the road. The next day we encountered a small problem with the water system. We were in Timaru for the night, Steve came first thing in the morning to check and work it out. The problem came back the next day and Steve did everything to get us into a place for repair along our route. We finally discovered what was the issue (process) and we were OK for the rest of the trip - no problem with the camper.

Before we arrived, we realized that the forecast for the nights was going to be much colder than anticipated. They gave us extra blankets, and a LPG indoor heater at no extra cost.

We dropped the camper at the location near the airport, easy and simple. We truly enjoyed working and dealing with Steve - he is a nice guy, very friendly and a business owner who has at heart his customers. Without hesitation we do recommend G&J Campers for international travelers who are seeking to hire a camper for their vacation.

Just arrived back in the UK from the best holiday ever! and had to put pen to paper in regard to the level of service that we received from Juliet and Gary at G&J Campers. From the first contact with Juliet we were impressed with the way that they helped us, we had never hired a camper van before and we can truly say they held our hand all the way through the hiring process, no question was left unanswered. We looked at loads of camper van companies, and G&J stood out from the rest, prompt replies from any emails that we sent. We hired a 4 berth camper van from G&J for 5 days, and whilst not brand new, it was in excellent condition and never caused us problems. Our requirements needed a pick up in Christchurch and drop off in Queenstown (you would be surprise how many of the "BIG camper van companies") could not or should that be would not do this! with G&J this was no problem. To illustrate the level of service this family run enterprise goes to, we overlooked a glasses case when we dropped the van of at Queenstown Airport (early morning flight but Juliet and Gary were there waiting for us) they e-mailed me trying to find what hotels we would be staying in on the north island so they could get the case back to us, I mean a glasses case!!. If you have read this review the only thing left to say is book with this company and you will not be disappointed. If we could score higher than a ten we would.

We picked the campervan up from Christchurch airport - they were waiting for us off our flight. We had issues getting cash out of our bank at the ATM at the airport so they patiently drove us to a branch in town. The van itself was SPOTLESS and well stocked. Everything was in excellent working order and we had absolutely no issues with the vehicle. There were 4 of us - 2 adults and 2 children - with enough room. The campervan was to be picked up by the company in Picton so we didn't have to drive back down south. We made a mistake in dates and were expecting the pickup a day late. As soon as we realized what happened, we phoned the owners and had the van ready for pickup in about half an hour - but 5 hours after the arranged time! Instead of charging us a late few or being really upset, they picked up the van patiently and left us with a bottle of NZ wine! We were very grateful for their understanding. All correspondence was fast and efficient. There was a detailed map left for us to use (we didn't hire GPS). Overall I would absolutely deal with G&J again - DO NOT HESITATE!

Want to take a minute to thank G&J for being good people who did something great for us a few weeks back. We had rented a six-passenger van from them and paid for the hire with a cheque. Unfortunately, the cheque was an old one and the extension at the end did not match our account number so bank rejected it. Another company may have flipped but Gary just dealt with the issue very calmly and professionally and we arranged to make a direct cash transfer instead. We hired a 2-berth campervan from Dunedin and then covered over 2000 kms in the course of a week. In advance of the holiday, communication from Gary and Juliet was excellent; clear, friendly and positive. The campervan was delivered exactly as agreed and was clean and appropriate to our needs. It then performed faultlessly for our week, was comfortable and was collected without quibble at the end of the period. The only issue that stops this review being a ten was payment. Paying the deposit cost me £25 for the privilege of making an international money transfer and there seemed to be no way around this. Paying the balance could then not be done by credit or debit card. This was something that was clearly pointed out to me in advance emails (overlooked by me!) but my mistake could have scuppered the whole arrangement had it not been for local relatives. It would have been necessary for me to have either arranged a banker's draft at further expense or withdraw and carry around more than NZ$2000 in cash to have avoided having a problem. My advice to others and what I would do next time would be to pay the whole balance up front in the first place. Nevertheless, G&J would be my first port of call if I were to tour new Zealand in a campervan again (which I have to say is a wonderful way of seeing a breathtakingly beautiful country in all of its glory).

We hired out a 4 berth Camper from Gary & Juliet when I competed in this years Coast to Coast multisport race. Found both Gary and Juliet to be very friendly and helpful. The camper was of a very high standard and we will def be hiring one from them for next years race.

I toured the South island in the 6 berth camper from G&J.Even though they are based in Timaru, not in Christchurch where we flew in,they happily delivered the camper to our motel, and made sure we were fully instructed on all we needed to know. They also picked up the camper from christchurch at the end of our wonderful holiday.Beforehand in the organizing stage I found both Gary and Juliet a pleasure to deal with ,and will most definitely use them again on our next trip (we cant wait). The vehicle was easy to operate and had everything we needed.I cannot rate Gary and Juliet's service and friendlyness highly enough. My thanks to you both for helping make our holiday so good.
