We have rented a large 6-berth VW camper at Kia Ora with our 2 children for a full 3 months (Jan-April), after various offers from large providers did not convince us. The contact with Vicky and Steve was very straightforward and personal right from the start. The offered value for money also spoke for a booking. Kindly, Vicky also provided us with free bicycles and various other items due to the long rental period. The takeover in Christchurch was very straightforward and we were very happy with our vehicle. Very clean and everything worked, although the vehicle was a bit older (which we knew). The decor was meticulously maintained and not just equipped with the essentials. With Britz and the other big companies you have to buy a lot of additionals, which Kia Ora simply has provided from the start. For minor problems, Steve was easily available and very accommodating (replacement lights, chairs, etc.). We had no additional costs and also an extension of the rent was without any problems and with very attractive price indeed. We can highly recommend Kia Ora if you value personal contact and would like to directly support Kiwi people and not big companies. At Kia Ora you are in perfect hands. We will hopefully come back sometime!

We decided to use Kia Ora based on their reviews, cost and the fact that they were a smaller company who valued their customers. We were given an older 6 berth CV and whilst it had a few minor issues it handled very well and we had no issues, it suited our needs and those of our 6 and 8-year-old children. In preparation for our trip, the communication was very prompt and any questions we had were addressed.
The 6 passenger Volkswagon Camper van we rented in March 2019 was better than we hoped. Since it is a 2011 year model we expected it to exhibit more wear and tear (renter abuse) than what we encountered. With 23300 kilometers on the odometer it was not show room new but was in great repair, tidy and performed well. A couple of the cabinet door latches would not cooperate and a plastic clip intended to hold a broom handle was broken. The propane house heater worked like a champ on some of the chilly mornings. The 2.2 liter turbo diesel and 6 speed automatic transmission hauled us up and down the mountains without a problem. The best thing about Kia Ora Campervans are Steve and Vicki Paul, the owners. We had occasion to stop by a camper van store that is also the rental center for some of the "Big Name" rental companies. They have a waiting lounge that had over a dozen people trying to get their vehicles. A shuttle picked us up at the airport, took us to a car park where our camper van and Steve were waiting for us. Steve gave us a through orientation, advised us where to a small shopping center to get provisions and lunch. He then had us follow him to the shopping center where by chance we encountered him again at the restaurant he recommended. We asked him to joined us for lunch and he graciously accepted. During lunch we peppered him with questions about points of interest. He was a wealth of information and added greatly to the overall experience. "Good on You" Kia Ora.
Kia Ora Campers responds:
Thanks for your kind words . I was a pleasure having you guys .
The van was good value for the price. There was a company rep who conducted the briefing of features of the van. He did not cover two specific issues. For example, I was shown the water inlet port and told to just fill the tank until it overflows. He failed to mention that there was a valve which requires the hose to be inserted past it to fill the tank. So my early attempts to fill the tank gave me the impression that it was full as water just gushed out. It wasn't until I ran out of water that I had to work that one out. The rep also showed me the waste water outlet drain, cap and valve and said that it was just a matter of connecting up the waste hose and allowing that to drain. Did that a couple of times without much results, so though that perhaps the water drained into the sewer cassette - which I cleared every other day. It wasn't until the shower failed to drain that I realised that there must be a blockage in the system. I prodded around with a metal coat hanger to attempt to clear that and out gushed the waste water, with what appeared to be tea leaves and other gunk from a previous renter - my partner and I drink tea from tea bags. Steve, the proprietor, was generally helpful when I rang him about these problems.

All is said in the rating ! We spent two times 4 weeks in a Kia Ora Mercedes 2 berth in February/March 2018 and 2019. Each time, great experience. Not a single mechanical problem with the van and Vicky and Steeve are very reactive to find a solution to any issue you could have, even when you create the problem a Sunday as we did this year :)
Kia Ora Campers is great value for money, we definitely recommend it if you're looking for a simple, efficient and well maintained campervan.
Thank you for supplying us with a well maintained vehicle. We hired a 4 berth for the 2 of us as it was for 4 weeks so we wanted enough space. The Kea Breeze. The vehicle drove very nicely and a joy to drive,Rear veiw reversing camera was very usefull.Well equipped with enough storage space. The vehicle became very much part of our adventure on this once in a lifetime holiday round this amazing country.Only challenges we had was the clean water was difficult to fill up on some occasions and also ran low quite quickly, although it was the first time we have used a campervan so wasn't used to being water saving conscious.
Great experience with Kia Ora Campers.
The camper was well maintained, drove really well, and communication with Kia Ora was easy and reactive!
We've had 2 breakdowns the first week. Nothing major but annoying. They handled it the best they could and we're fair with us at the end of the rental.
They helped us find a great place for the last night to catch our flight leaving very early in the morning...
Really happy with rental! Can only recommend this company!! We had a 6berth for 2 adults and 3 kids and we had plenty of room...
The van had one or two issues but they were sorted out. Very friendly service. Had an amazing trip.

Fabulous trip. Highly recommended.
I was concerned about booking with other companies due to many poor reviews. We had left it a bit late but fortunately Rankers managed to source a rental from Kia Ora who have a great rep. We had an older Mercedes Getaway but it was perfect for the 2 of us. First campervan experience. The van performed well and was surprisingly comfortable to sleep in. We had it for 3 weeks and had a great time. The only issue we encountered was a puncture. Vicky promptly arranged for the AA to come and switch wheels and then we eventually took it to a garage who fixed the puncture and Vicky paid them over the phone.
Great experience and we will use these guys again in future if we make it back to NZ.

The negative points:
KIA ORA CAMPERS does not manage its vehicles directly, but passes through service companies (during delivery and upon return). KIA ORA was to pick us up at our guesthouse to take us to the delivery place, but after some difficult explanations (we do not speak English very well, especially on the phone), we took a taxi (refunded). When delivering the camping car nobody could explain how the vehicle worked (gearbox and engine start, in particular), which was different from a French model. During heavy rain, our camper took the water from the roof (skylight and air conditioner) = we had to put tape with a plastic film under the skylight, because the water ran on our bed ... The answer of KIA ORA was telling us to fold our bed, but did not tell us how it was when it was raining at night!
The camping chairs were the worst we've seen during our trip to the other rental companies, and we did not dare to move, as they were so fragile.
The equipment for camping was really reduced, even for 2 people: 2 glasses, 2 cups, 2 bowls, 2 plastic boxes, 1 kitchen knife (broken), no colander, no toilet brush, ...
The positive points:
The vehicle was 240,000km, but worked very well.
Kia Ora Campers responds:
Thanks for your feedback Jean , although a little harsh.
As owners of Kia Ora Campers we do manage our campers directly but we can't be everywhere unfortunately .
For a start we ordered 2 taxis , that you missed so with the language barrier we got you to get one yourself , that cost us over $100 .
The camper was explained VERY well but because you couldn't speak any english some things may have been missed . i.e. Having your foot on the brake whilst putting into drive , which i would think is compulsory in all auto's.
And after driving it already would have learnt .
Regarding the camp chairs we don't charge for them and if they break we ask you to replace them and we pay for that, larger moire expensive ones take up to much room
also at no cost you got a GPS, camp table, toilet chemical and portable bbq.
as a 2-berth they are set out for 2 of everything so why would you expect more as space is always an issue for equipment.
We are proud to say that we are 100% contactable without have to go to options and getting sent to voice mail.
