The worst experience ever!!!! No one answered the after hours phone. Instead we were told by an automated message to call back in business hours. We were stranded at Auckland airport at 1am with a 20 month old and no baby car seat. Very upset we had to transport our son in an unsafe way but had no choice. Had to pay over $100 in cab fees to get to where we were staying. The next day when we explained what had happened the office staff insinuated that we must have called the wrong number which we confirmed we had the correct after hours number. No one would help us with our complaint. We were given the Operations Managers number (Nicole) and tried unsuccessfully to email and phone Nicole for 8 days. She ignored all of our messages. Then on Christmas Eve we finally managed to speak with the Reservations Manager (tony) who seemed to listen and asked us to email him through the times of which we tried to call to pass onto Nicole. We were told we would hear something on Boxing Day. We heard nothing!! Rang Tony back on the last day of our holiday and he refused to speak with me!!!!!! Unbelievable. Then finally after being very firm with the girl we were speaking with spoke with the Manager of Apex (Derek) who refunded our after hours fee and 1 day car hire after saying there is no such message asking people to call back in business hours. Well there certainly is Derek so best you get that fixed!!!! All up the shonkiest car rental place I have ever come across and when back in NZ will NOT be using them. Worst service ever. Don't use them.

We picked up our car from Queenstown Airport on Dec 3, 2013, and returned the car at Christchurch Airport at 4.45am Dec 13, 2013. Drop-off was off office hour, so we paid $25 extra for the return and for the shuttle bus to take us from their parking lot to the airport that morning.

Everything went well at first. We called again the day before returning our car to make sure somebody will be at the Christchurch branch at 4.45am and there would be a shuttle bus to take us to the airport (Apex is usually further away from the airport to justify its lower price compared to other American rental companies). Someone answered the phone saying there'll be their staff when I return my car.

Deeply to my disappointment, we got to Apex Christchurch branch at 4.30am and waited for 30 minutes and nobody showed up or picked up our phone. We called Apex hotline for more than a dozen times and left multiple voice messages. We were extremely worried we were gonna miss our flight to Auckland and a connecting flight back to Hong Kong. Luckily the parking lot about 1km from Apex was open at that time and they offered to take us to the airport. However, Apex don't pay them and they couldn't hold the key to the car we left outside Apex's gate, and so we kept the key so that someone can pick it up from Auckland airport when we wait for the next flight.

When we arrived at Auckland airport, we called Apex Auckland after 8am so that they can send someone to pick up the key. I thought this was a gentle gesture to make their job easier (otherwise I may have to mail it back from Hong Kong). HOWEVER, when a lady at the Auckland branch answered my call, she blamed me saying "we are only open at 8am, why did you not leave the key in the car?", and totally ignored my grievance of nearly missing my flight only because of Apex's fault, and the fact that I paid extra to arrange the early morning drop-off. What an attitude, rarely seen in a large company in any part of the developed world.

Apex Rental Cars responds:

I am sorry that you were not able to return your vehicle as per the instructions that we supplied to you

Unfortunately, I am not sure how we could have done any better for you

I have here in front of me a copy of the contract that you signed at Queenstown Airport - the entire back page of the the contract is devoted to ensuring that you have clear instructions as to how to return the car. Unfortunately I can't post it on this site.

In your case the contract states:

"*Please return the vehicle to Airpark Canterbury17-25 Logistics Drive and they will transfer you to the terminal five minutes away.*" - The rest of the A4 sheet is taken up with a large map showing the precise location of logistics drive and Airpark Canterbury.

When you uplifted the car, the return arrangements were specifically discussed with you - after signature, the contract was turned over and the map and return location was pointed out to you. You will note that the asterixes on your copy of the instructions are hand written in pen - we ask our CSRs to do this to show that they have indeed specifically discussed the return instructions with you

You will no doubt have a copy of this contract and I invite you to check for yourself. (It is probably asking a bit much that after checking your contract, you might give some thought as to whether your above post on this site and others is actually fair and reasonable)

As to parking the car in a position so as to block one of our depot gates and then taking the car key to Auckland Airport - well you can imagine how that went down at the peak of the Christmas season...
