We used apex for three weeks in NZ, in Coromandel and around Queenstown. Both experiences were excellent: Not brand new but 3-4 year old cars, easy to drive (both automatic), much cheaper than the international brand names, good service, easy to increase our hire from 1 week to 2, no problems dropping off. We went for no excess, so paid extra for the peace of mind, but it was still good value.

Avoid like the plague! We hired a Toyota Corolla from the Auckland office in November 2017 for a planned 3 weeks. Although it had lots of dents and 180,000 km on the clock, we were assured it was a good car. After 2 weeks, whilst in Queenstown, an elderly lady reversed into us when we were stationery. She admitted full responsibility and gave us her insurance details. The damage was no worse than the existing dents on the car. I read the small print on the hire contract that required us to visit the nearest Apex office to register the accident. This took half a day out of our itinerary and the office demanded we paid 2000 NZD which would be refunded less the cost of repair. As we had excess CDW insurance in place and the lady had accepted full liability, we reluctantly agreed.
It is now 21st January 2018 and Apex Claims Department have not even had the decency to reply to the numerous emails sent by me and my insurance company who understandably require a repair invoice and assurance that they will not be making a claim against the lady's insurance company ( as they stated they would not be doing)
I suspect the car will not be worth repairing and that Apex do not even intend to repair it due to its age and condition..
The incident has caused a lot of stress to us and took the shine off a great holiday.

We recently returned from NZ and left the hire car after hours. Apex took $2000 out of my account and are saying to fill out a incident form for the small amount of damage on a front bumper but not really sure what damage as we returned the car just like we found it. It had too many marks to enter on the form as the guy was telling me so we believed him. His words were this is just wear and tear. But apart from all this it's the customer service we have received since calling 5 times and leaving our details and what we are calling about we have received no return phone calls. We have also sent emails but no returned emails.

My main problem happened when the car key snapped as I turned the lock in the door - the key batteries were flat so I had needed to manually open the door
I was stranded in a car park outside a supermarket, an hour from my accommodation at the Coromandel, with my 7 yo daughter.
After a few calls back and forth (boring details), I called Apex again stating that my phone battery was in the red and was told that they could get a key to me tomorrow
I said that this was not acceptable as i was in a car park with my daughter an hours drive from my accommodation
they asked me to wait, and I was left for 5 - 10 minutes listening to the staff laughing and joking among themselves
in the mean time i managed to use pliers i had bought at the supermarket to clamp the key back together and start the car
when Apex came back on the phone I told them i had started the car
they told me to drive to the Auckland office and pick up a new key
I told them that they would need to pay for my accommodation, as I had paid for my accommodation that night at the Corromandel
They refused to pay
I stated I was not happy with the service and would write a complaint
they stated 'Well that's fine, and things are about to get worse because you will need to pay for a new key'
I did manage to get the car to my accommodation, start it again and also get petrol and start it again (near my accommodation, just in case I couldn't start the car again)
I was told that the key would be waiting for me with the shuttle driver as i would arrive after hours
When I got there, no one knew about the key and they spent 10 minutes trying to find one for me
I felt that the staff on the phone did not care at all for my situation or wellbeing at all

We decided to book with APEX because we figured as a local company they would be a good choice and possible more affordable over the international companies. - How wrong we were.

we arrived at 1am in Auckland, and had reserved our car, and had the instructions from APEX for after hours pickup, which is offsite at the long term car park.
My wife, 2 kids, a number of bags, 1am - go to the offsite lot - NO CAR, sure they had the booking but forgot to leave the car.

Now I have to go back to the terminal, a wife, 2 kids, bags after a long flight, its 2.30am ish, domestic terminal closed, only Thrifty (no cars), Europecar (who wanted $180 per day) and Avis are open at the international terminal.
We book an avis car, its $300 more expensive than our APEX booking - but at least they have a car.

APEX pass my information onto their Auckland Airport Manager (Damion) who we never hear from.

When I go back to NZ, stay with the big guys (Avis, Hertz, Thrifty etc), at least they wont leave you stranded and more often than not followup with the customer. Avoid APEX...
