Charged the full 2000 NZD damage excess for an accident that all parties (including Apex, in writing) agree was not my fault. Absolute worst case scenario. (Yes, the contract is written that way, so it will happen to you, too.)

The staff in APEX Victoria St Auckland Central were nice and that's good. The problem I had with this company is the van we rented. We got a Hyndai iMax which was very weak and slow. It took forever to rev up the speed and mostly stuck to 40 mph even if I full-stepped on the pedal! Imagine what we had to go through driving this van in Coromandel where roads were mostly uphill! We always had a line of cars stuck behind us coz this van can't just speed up! It was an automatic van but it took forever for the gear to shift and mostly sounded like it was gonna blow before it shifts. Crazy.

Aside from that, locking/unlocking the van was a hit or miss. Had to do it a couple times before it does what's it's asked to do.
The sliding doors were also a hit and miss. Sometimes it opens, sometimes it doesn't. Always had to work around it before it works.

When I called them regarding the issue, I was told that the van didn't have problems when others were renting it. Well maybe the issue only started after the last customer returned it or whatever. Vehicles should all be checked before passing it on to another customer. We didn't feel safe at all.

Because this van was too slow, we were late in returning it at 5pm and they close at that time so we called and luckily the staff agreed to return it the next morning free of charge. Appreciated that but I know we deserved it after all the trouble we had to deal with the van.

Not happy with the experience we had with Apex rentals. The vehicle we hired was very slow. It took forever to 70km let alone 100km in a 100km zone. The battery went flat twice and the mud guard on tyre was rubbing on tyre. If I could, I would give this a -0

We choose the $2,000 deductible and got a stone chip in the windshield on the 2nd day of a 3-week rental. Apex personnel were very honest and reported back to me that the repair cost was just $50. I received a $1,950 credit on my card. The car ran beautifully throughout the trip. Plus, Apex is a very honest company.

Apex was able to hire us a last minute car (within 48 hours) on a one way rental from Queenstown to Christchurch. The associate we dealt with in Queenstown didn't have the kindest attitude, but her efficiency was solid. The car we were assigned was clean, but we could definitely feel the wear & tear on it, as it took its time to get going again after any full stop or yield and sometimes sounded like it was running on dead batteries. The associate in Christchurch was kind and made the drop-off process easy.

I had a very bad experience with APEX Christchurch. The staff that I had to deal with was horrible. She treated me like rubbish. She was so rude to me (I am Asian). She also requested me to do the paper test. And she refused to get me the car by saying that I got one wrong answer. However, she talked to the next European customer nicely and didn't request him to do the paper test.

This is racist, double standard and unacceptable. I don't know how the Company trains their staff.
If APEX requires the customer to do the paper test, the Company should mention on the website or on the booking.

Anyway I returned to the Airport and rented a car with Entreprise. The staff was friendly and helpful. The service was excellent. The process was quick and easy.

Worst experience of my life.

Their cars are not road worthy in the slightest, despite what they claim. Their staff are incredibly rude and their only aim is to get you out of the car yard as soon as possible. The girl serving us was offended that i wanted to make sure there was a spare tyre in our boot. She said to me "what, you don't trust us?".

No, no i don't.

Our first car, a Toyota Camry, had warped brake discs which caused the car to vibrate uncontrollably when braking.
We took the car back and they replaced it with another Camry that had the exact same problem. We took the second car back as well and they said they would replace it again. While filling out the paper work i noticed that the registration on the third car was the same as the first car we received. I asked them if they had fixed the braking issue on that car and they said they didn't bother because in their minds there is nothing wrong with it.

We refused the car and after much arguing we eventually cancelled our contract with them under the grounds that they would not supply us with a safe car. They refused our refund request and we went next door to Go rentals who were fantastic.

Save your money and don't put your holiday at risk. We lost 2 days worth of our holiday dealing with these idiots, don't do what we did.
