Hired a corolla in Auckland for a romantic round trip for 2 - part way through it became a family road trip with adult kids after family breakdown. Went to Wellington office to ask if any chance of an upgrade. The staff were amazing and couldn’t have done more to help us out. Result was a very comfortable RAV4 at a reasonable negotiated price. We are very grateful for the service and consideration we received - thank you

The customer service staff (Hebe) was inexperienced and could not find our booking initially. She actually asked us to go through her list ourselves! Luckily we have a printout and I gave her our booking number.
Then she wanted us to take a test to check if we are familiar with local traffic rules. Before that she has already made us signed a declaration that we have received the traffic rule booklet from her. She did not clarify if the test was a country or company policy but anyway again she was not entirely clear about the rules herself. After a red eyed flight, it was rather stressful to take the test especially after she warned that if we fail it the second time, we will not be able to rent the car!
After crossing this hurdle, we finally got the car and the GPS. However she did not bother to test the GPS and unfortunately it was a faulty one. Her colleague has to help us secure a decent working one after the sixth or more attempt!
Overall it was a rather unpleasant experience to rent from Apex and I would not recommend it.

Apex car rentals at Auckland airport were great!! Just had to call them when you arrive at the airport (could be difficult if your international) they come and pick you up, the hire process is really simple, quick, efficient, cars are in great condition, and to return was also super quick and simple. Would 100% recommend and use again!

We rented last February in Nelson having flown in from British Columbia, Canada ...staff in the office were friendly and helpful as we picked up our car. My only concern at the time was that one of the tires was very worn.
Fast forward ten days and the unthinkable happened. While driving in a fairly remote area north of Takaka, a person pulled out of a farm driveway straight into the side of our car as we were travelling down the highway, pushing us into the opposite lane where we came to a stop a couple of hundred yards down the road. Although we sustained shock and substantial internal bruising/soreness from the seatbelts, we escaped "serious" injury. We phoned the number to contact at Apex (at first getting no answer) and were told there was nothing they could do for us until business hours the next day ... in Nelson, 2 hours south. We were then faced with having to find our own way back, in spite of our distressed state of mind and the fact that our rental car was a write-off. We were very fortunate though, in that the local police took it upon themselves to drive us back to a motel in Nelson along with all our belongings.
The next day we attended the Apex office in Nelson. Staff there were very sympathetic and assured us there should be restitution of our collision deductible ("excess") because the other driver was totally at fault and had been charged by police. We picked up another car even though we had to just stay put locally for a number of days until we felt physically able to travel.
A few days later, a claims manager explained that because of the NZ "no fault" type of insurance system, only "in some instances" would restitution be possible. After 6 months of emailing & investigation we got absolutely nothing from Apex ... just the $500 bill for our excess. This in spite of the fact that Apex was totally paid out for their own deductible by IAG. Lesson: only buy full coverage on NZ rentals even though the cost to do so will be much greater!

Our car was fine. However the most impressive thing about Apex was how much help we received when returning our car. We were running late to catch our plane and the man on the desk- Anthony , could not have been more obliging. He was so helpful and successfully got us to the airport in time. So thanks Anthony.

We recently hired a car from Apex rentals in Queenstown Airport. We had a lovely lady collect us from the airport, we dealt with a fantastic customer services agent named Katie and the car did its job - it got us to and from the mountain.

Upon returning the car we had to drop the keys down a chute as it was an early morning drop off. (5am) As we dropped the keys in the chute we realized we had left our go pro camera in the car under the seat. (you could see the black handle still) Unfortunately we had to get on our plane and as it was so early there was no-one to speak to. We thought its OK we'll just call them when we land - which we did.

We were pushed from pillar to post for a total of 6 days! The manager made no effort to speak to us, poor Katie the lovely Customer services agent had to constantly relay messages from the unseen manager.

Its now 6 days later and we have finally been told 'it's not there!' which is funny because it was when we left the car!

I feel sad for the workers who are employed there- I hope they don't have anything taken from them.

As for the manager who thought it was OK to constantly shrug off our plight A managers job is to handle these situations with customers. The eventual email we received once the police and superiors were mentioned only go to show that there was some realization that our mater had been handled ineffectively.

If you wish to hire a car in Queenstown use another company!

We just finished our 71 days car rental with Apex, 10,000kms.

While we were researching about car rental in New zealand, we came across a lot of negative reviews about Apex. We, consciously, decided to choose Apex because the cost of rental was one-third compared to Hertz, Avis etc. We asked a lot of questions to them about the condition, make and year of their car. Apex staff patiently responded to all our questions

We are so pleased to write this review. Apex didn’t dispappoint us. We had a Toyota Corolla 2010, with 165000 miles on it when we picked up the car. I think Apex is comeptitive because they are very old player in the rental market, therefore they have old, but well maintained cars.

We didn’t have any issues with the Toyota at all. It worked in all road and weather conditions. After a month of rental, in the beginning of April, when we were in Wellington, we took the car to the Apex location in Wellington. We requested to do service check since we were going to drive it for another 50 days in South Island. The Wellington staff were very prompt and cooperative.

Overall, we are very satisfied with Apex vehicle and customer service. Would recommend to other travelers. It is well suited for people who are budget traveler.
