A climb to a lookout above Kohaihai

Kohaihai is 16 km north of Karamea at the southern end of the Heaphy Track.

The start of the track is signposted 3 minutes after the start of the tracks heading towards the bridge over the Kohaihai River.

The grassy track climbs to a lookout over the parking area at the mouth of the Kohaihai River.

Polynesian History

Archaeological excavations near the Heaphy Hut in the 1960s revealed moa bones, middens, post holes, fireplaces, cooking shelters and huts. Adzes, fish-hooks and darts were among the artefacts found. These finds got the archaeologists excited so over the succeeding decades more thorough digs unearthed greater details of this Archaic Period of Maori occupation over many centuries from as early as the late 1300s but certainly from the 1500s. Unusual examples included flaked nephrite tools and stone pavements.

At the mouth of the Kohaihai, there may have been similar settlements, but such is the dynamism of this landscape, the remains are washed away.
