The One Spot Worth Knowing
Freedom camping in Marlborough basically comes down to one place: the Wairau Diversion. It's by the Wairau River mouth, recently re-opened, and honestly the best freedom camping in the region by a good margin. On a clear day you can see Mt Tapuae-o-Uenuku in the distance - the tallest mountain outside the Southern Alps. Decent fishing for Kahawai at dusk or dawn too, if that's your thing.
Worth the Short Drive
If you're coming off the ferry into Picton, note there's no freedom camping in town itself. But the Diversion is only about half an hour toward Blenheim, so it's an easy detour and well worth it. It also has wine tour pickups, which is handy if you're planning a day in wine country and want to base yourself somewhere other than a holiday park.
