Where the Mountains Meet the Deep

Kaikoura sits in one of the more dramatic settings in the South Island. The Seaward Kaikoura Range presses right up against the Pacific, and just offshore the Kermadec trench drops away into the deep. That geography is what makes this place tick. It's not just pretty scenery - it's the reason the marine life is so abundant and the whole place feels a bit wild and edge-of-the-earth.

The Coastal Drive is Genuinely Good

The stretch of SH1 between Oaro and Kekerengu is up there with the best coastal drives in the country. Plenty of pull-over spots, big ocean views, and Ohau Point for a roadside seal colony that needs no effort at all. Worth knowing though - either side of this section, SH1 goes back to being fairly drab. The section south from Christchurch to Oaro especially. Stick to the good bit and don't rush it.

On Land, the Peninsula Walkway Delivers

The Peninsula Walkway is the standout land-based natural attraction here. You don't have to do the whole thing, but the seals are everywhere along the route - honestly, if you think something on the beach is driftwood, it's probably a seal. If you want a bigger challenge, Mt Fyffe is a solid slog with the best panoramic views in the region. Clear day only though, and go early.
