One of the best campsites for facilities we stayed in New Zealand.
The site we had for our motorhome was very open, however we were lucky to be here off peak so that didn’t affect us so much. The staff and other reviews mentioned a 5 minute drive into Napier city centre; it is also a very easy 20 - 30 minute walk. The restaurant onsite was open and served what looked like pub meals. I would imagine in peak time this place would pack you in like sardines however we lucked out and we had a lot of space and the campsite was relatively quiet. Also easy to get the local wineries via bikes which they hire on site.

Cosy it is.
There are a number of additions to this camp, with the spring pools and the hot beach however I am always mindful of the copious amount of people that go through them. It is in a great position to walk into town and do the walk around the government gardens and thermal garden (there is a map around the town that leads you). We went wandering for around 1.5 hours, so after a day in the motorhome it was great to stretch the legs. The bathrooms were clean and the place was secure. In all a good central place to stay.

Travelling with my husband in a motorhome we spent one night at this park.
We were given a site directly in front of the amenities building; however being a long weekend I think we were lucky to get a site at all! The amenities were good; clean, free showers and a hairdryer in the ladies. I used the laundry which was good; the standard $4 per wash and dry. The campsite is within walking distance to the town centre and is situated the opposite side of the road that the water is; so no water view, just in the blocks of the town. It was an OK stopover, nothing to write home about.

My husband and I spent our first night at the Sandspit campground, which was an easy and pretty drive from Auckland.
The camp was very quiet and we were given a waterfront powered site. This campsite is really a little community; it has a village feel with buildings established around the yesteryear. There is so much memorabilia around the buildings you can spend a good hour exploring. The waterway is tidal, so as with the tides in many parts of NZ you can go from a beach to a big sand/mud flat. My one big hint from this place is go for a walk at low tide around the peninsula (so to the right of the park facing the water). You will come across what looks like volcanic mud pools and a feast of oysters; don’t forget an oyster chucker! So put this altogether with bathrooms that are the best I have had in NZ (to date), this campsite has spoilt us from the get go; this place is gold.

My husband and I were travelling in a motorhome and stayed one night here at a powered site.
The customer service was great when we arrived and we were kindly shown to our site which overlooked the water; in fact I think all the sites have water views which is a total bonus. The only reason I mark this as a 6 is that there is not a lot to do if you want to walk. The beach is very tidal and it really isn’t a ‘pretty’ beach and there isn’t a long walk along it. I found the bathrooms average and it really does my head in that you have to pay for a shower when you have paid almost $50 for 2 people. So all in all I loved the view of the water from the van however waited till the next camp to have a shower!
