Sandflies were indeed very bad.
Campsite itself is very nice and open, next to a river. Toilet was clean.

Stayed here in a 1p motel room.
Woke up in the middle of the night to someone throwing up next to my window. Pots and pans not included, we arrived after office hours so had no tools to cook with.

Good: large campground, even if it is busy you will get a lot of privacy.
Next to a road but road noise is barely noticeable.
Downsides: only one drop toilet. As it is quite a large park, you might be walking 5 minutes to the toilet. Toilet smelled so bad, i could almost taste the awful odor.

Very nice campsite.
Private spots, all well maintained. Drop toilets are clean. Perfect if you are going to do the Tongariro crossing the next day (20-25 min drive to shuttle bus). Only point is that the tent sites had a picnic area, whilst the vehicle sites were all plain and a small walk away

It is free, so there is that.
However, much oneven terrain, so you have to arrive early. However, if you do, expect every place to be taken as it was so busy. Droptoilets and portaloos were very discusting. You are not next to the river directly, as the pictures suggest, you are a 5 min walk away.

Not DOC anymore.
Was here on NYE, so naturally very busy. Facilities were basic, but clean. Very friendly staff. As there are no reservations, you might be able to grab a spot when all other parks are fully booked. Getting a spot outside the holiday season is fine. Almost no signal at all.

Somehow way more people then the maximum amount of camperspots.
Toilets were ok. Below average for a DOC campingspot

Fields get very soggy after a day drizzling rain.
Not much space on the gravel, so we canceled and found another spot.
Beware: many sandflies in this region!

Good: Facilities are very nice.
Camp is well maintained. Friendly staff
Downsides: quite a long walk away from the beach (20 minutes). Spots are quite small. Relative pricey, especially if you consider you need to pay extra for the shower.

What a campsite.
Found it by accident because we wanted to see the nature around Rivendell. Very large grassy fields, a lot next to the river. Lots of open spaces. Facilities are good. Lower terraces are in my opinion the best as they are next to the river. However, powered sites are only at the upper terraces

Good: friendly staff, very helpful.
Showers are amazing, I can confirm. Other facilities are also good.
Downsides: campspots are quite small and you don't get a lot of privacy. Campsite is next to a swimming pool with loud music until 6 pm.

Nice lady at the desk.
Powered campsite with beautiful lake view. Kitchen was nice. Toilets and showers were sufficient. Price was average. Wifi was not very good

Plenty of space, good alternative if horahora domain is full.
Also a great place before a visit to Hobbiton movie set. Pretty clean drop toilets. Minor downside is that it is on the side of the road.
