A remote but very special place that is worth a visit.
About an hour down a bumpy gravel road through the sparsely populated countryside suddenly lands you in a wild land if grassy fields interspersed with forest that feels ancient and full of magic. Mushrooms spring up from the forest floor that is otherwise surprisingly free of small plants. Large mountains loom over the area. We went mid-week in April and there were only 3 other campers in an enormous camping area. We found a spot where we could see no other people in any direction. The pit toilets were the cleanest I’ve seen and it was the only place we have camped in NZ that allowed campfires in designated areas. I would definitely return given the opportunity.
