It's a wonderful spot near the tidal mouth of the Waiotahe river, and close to the huge white sand sweep of Waiotahe Beach.
You're only 4km from Onekawa Te Mawhai Regional Park, where there is an excellent bush/coastal walk and numerous picnic spots.
Te Ahiaua has a shelter, bench seating and plenty of space for recreation. You must camp in the signed area at the eastern end of the field.

What a beautiful spot, new parking spaces which are pretty level and no garbage anywhere. The only negative is the road noise, it isn’t that bad and goes away after a few beers.

great location, we arrived after dark and there still some spaces , in the morning you can see the beautiful beach and the great surroundings.

Absolutely beautiful, just a short walk to clean toilets and fresh pipes and cocktails off the beach

We did not stay here. It was too loud and had too many people driving around in the lots. We didn’t feel safe. We chose to splurge and stay at the holiday park down the road.

Big space but very unclear where designated area was especially after dark... didn't have a problem though, very noisy from about 4 with heavy trucks and traffic on the highway... didn't use toilets but there are some on site. Need to be self contained anyhow.

One of the two excellent Freedom Camping offerings near Opotiki. The outlook faces north and is stunning. Watch the locals dig for pipi's at low tide (or even join them :) The only downside is lack of privacy and road noise due to being right next to a busy state highway.
