The ferry is the only way across Foveaux Strait and most travellers know it. The crossing takes about an hour on a purpose-built catamaran and it gets the job done. The price draws a bit of grumbling in the reviews, but nobody's swimming to Rakiura, so here we are.
The strait can be properly rough. A decent chunk of reviewers mention seasick stomachs, so if you're prone, grab some pills before you board and take them early. The crew get consistent praise for being genuinely helpful, especially with kids who've had a hard time on the water.
Once you're across, Oban is a small and lovely little place and the national park is right there. The island is the whole point and the ferry is simply how you get there. Use promo code RANKERS for 10% off the crossing, which helps soften the ticket price a touch.

Bumpy ride, be aware of the sea sickness. Very nice employees though, helped us and they were very good with our daughter who became seasick.

Loved the cruise and walk on Ulva Island, saw lots of wildlife.
Crew were very experienced and little village of Oban lovely.

A very informative trip which I probably would have missed if I had known there were only 27km of road.
Also Ulva Island trip very good.

Very interesting commentary along the coastline gives a real insight into the varied and busy history and present day acitivites of the Island.
The walk on Ulva was interesting and the guides were well informed but the chance of seeing birds are severly hindered by the chatter of the group along the way. But well worth doing the tour.

Ferry quite expensive.
Actually anything on Stewart Island. But lovely place, great birdlife & inconvenient timetable ferry.

Recommended for a longer stay on the island. For just one night to look for Kiwi's then it is not worth it.

Cruise not that spectacular, walk on Ulva Island to short. Unfortantly not many birds.

Village & bays tour excellent.
Paterson Inlet Cruise also excellent but would like more time to explore island. Staff all very friendly, no tight time schedules.

All very good. Weather was good which made our day!
