  • Predator control operation for Abel Tasman National Park

    A predator control operation using toxic bait containing 1080 was completed on 12 September 2025.

    Abel Tasman National Park is open to the public with warning signs in place at key entrances.

    There may be toxic carcasses and bait (green coloured pellets) in the area. It’s not safe to hunt for food in this area for up to 8 months. Warning signs and this web alert will be removed when the area is safe again.

    You are not allowed to hunt or bring your dog to this area at any time.

    DOC and Project Janszoon are carrying out the operation in partnership and it supports DOC's National Predator Control Programme to protect native species.

Waiharakeke Bay campsite is categorised as a DOC Great Walk Campsite. The following pricing indicates usual pricing. Adults from $5 to $32, children from $0 to $16, infants are free. DOC Great Walk Campsite

Except for the Milford Track and Paparoa Track, all Great Walks offer camping near huts or in designated areas. There are nearly 60 Great Walk campsites offering basic facilities including toilets, handwashing sinks and a water supply with some being treated and some untreated. Untreated water should be boiled before use to ensure it's safe. Some have picnic tables and cooking shelters. These do not include the indoor facilities provided at Great Walk huts.

  • Set back in the bush, up high, this campsite is a little different to most others in the Abel Tasman, but there's something about it and the beach below is a real beauty.

    Generally much quieter than nearby Awaroa and Totaranui. Flush toilets too!
