The Four Sisters are kauri that sprout from the same base, although some may be growing at the expense of others.
The kauri walks are signposted 11km north of Waipoua River Road and 1km south of Tane Mahuta on S.H.12.
There is a large parking area where your vehicle will be guarded for a small fee.
From the carpark follow the wide, even and metalled track for 7 minutes to the three way junction. The Four Sisters are signposted on the right. A boardwalk circumnavigates the trees.
It is very important that you keep to the walking track at all times. The kauri tree has very sensitive surface roots, and foot traffic around the tree endangers their life span.
Kauri trees occasionally create unusual growth forms. At times the trunks of two, three, four, five and even six trees can grow joined together at the base of the trees. In the Waipoua Forest Conservation Estate is a group of trees known as the Four Sisters. You will see four Kauri trees, with evenly spaced slender trunks, arising from a large mound of pukahukahu. A similar growth can be seen in Trounson Kauri Park to the south.

Walking through the forest and reaching the giant Kauri trees, that was great! They are so impressive! There are loads of signs reminding us to protect them - maybe too many?

Very good and easy walks to the Four Sisters, King of the Forest etc. The tallest Kauri trees in NZ, looking amazing! Good DoC camp nearby.
Each camping location is approved by a regional council in NZ. So if it shows on the map, you’re allowed to stay.

It was like a walk in a botanic garden, striking plant diversity, outstanding trees. Why had we to pay a warden for the parking??
