This is a gallery dedicated to modern art and photography.
It does not have any specific relevance to Christchurch. Despite its deep collection of Canterbury art, especially by graduates of Cant School of Art, it shows very little that reflects this rich history.

Helpful staff. I went there twice because I liked it so much. There is art for everyone. I preferred Pop/Op Art and sculptures.

Jess liked the White exhibition but Rose was unimpressed.
Rose did love "Up Against Down" though; the guy throwing himself against a wall was capitivating and she loved the use of video. Some of the contemporary art was awesome; most of the traditional stuff was dull.

Helpful staff, and a lovely building, but the "special" exhibitions during our visit were uninspiring and a little embarrassing.
Made up for by the static, historical displays, such as portraits of early Maori men and men, if not the typical "ye olde english paintinges" one can find hanging wearily on any Commonwealth gallery wall. Visit it for a quick glimpse at the culturally relevant paintings, to snicker at the post-modern attempts at art, and escape the cold for a few minutes. Or, you could just visit the gallery to use the bathrooms. Which in itself is a post-modern act of performance art.... sigh...
