Lake Taupō is big and open and beautiful, and most people see it from the shore. Getting out on the water to the Māori Rock Carvings is a different thing entirely. They're only reachable by boat, which already makes this worth doing. The sailing itself is relaxed, the crew are knowledgeable about the area and the volcanic landscape, and there's usually a chance to jump in for a swim if you're keen.
The Rankers code gets you 10% off, which is worth grabbing if you're already planning to go. A quiet, electric-powered yacht also means it's genuinely peaceful out there, no engine noise drowning out the skipper's stories, which reviewers consistently mention as a highlight. One described the skipper as "wicked, funny and fantastic" and I reckon that tracks with what most people seem to experience.
This one works well for families and it works well for couples too. It's not a high-adrenaline thing, it's more of a slow, genuinely scenic couple of hours on one of NZ's most striking lakes. My pick would be a clear day with Ngauruhoe in the background. That backdrop with the carvings is hard to beat.
