We operate supported cycling tours in the beautiful South Island, including the Otago Rail Trail and Alps 2 Ocean Trail. Our tours are well researched, meticulously planned, and expertly led by our team of dedicated guides. Ebikes are available.

We prefer to visit places far from the bustling tourist scene – places that are beautiful, sometimes remote, usually peaceful, and more often than not enhanced by the local communities that host us.

Our supported bike tours are on dedicated cycle trails, or on quiet rural country roads in areas of the country that offer stunning scenery and historical interest. We provide full vehicle support, so that those who do not wish to cycle the full distances may hop on and off as desired. Our tour packages include all transport and dedicated guides, accommodation, and most meals. We use good quality accommodation based on double/twinshare rooms (mostly with en-suite facilities), and catering is wholesome and plentiful. Current tour options include:

Otago Rail Trail
Alps 2 Ocean Trail
West Coast Wilderness Trail
Around the Mountains Trail
Queenstown Lakes Trail
Roxburgh Gorge Trail
West Coast Wilderness Trail
Wild West Coast Trail
Marlborough Wine Trail
Tasman Great Taste Trail
Canterbury Backcountry Trail

Southern Mountains and Lakes (Feb 2013)
What a fantastic experience – a variety of dramatic and pleasant scenery, excellent range of accommodation, delicious high quality meals (both from the hands of our wonderful guides Sue and Chris, and at a variety of restaurants), great company and informative commentary. Our guides Sue and Chris were excellent in that role but also were great company, with good senses of humour. The tour provided a balance between scenic views whilst travelling on the bus, and great walking in a range of terrains/environments - mountains, lakes, forests etc – coupled with unique fauna experiences, including kiwi, penguins and a wide range of native birds. A photographer’s paradise! The organisation was top notch – everything ran smoothly. A thoroughly recommendable experience: not glitz, just good travel and walking in a friendly environment.

Northern Beaches and Sounds (Mar2013)
This company’s reputation remains superb in our minds after another wonderful experience. As usual everything ran to schedule under the careful watch of our guide Sue. There was a wide range of terrains on offer – beaches, forests, lakes, mountains etc – all with interesting commentary from Sue. The walking was on good tracks, and to a degree away from the madding crowd, so we were usually on our own to enjoy both the spectacular and the sedate elements of the scenery on offer. Another photographer’s paradise! Accommodation was varied, including the interesting San Souci at Golden Bay, but always of a high standard. Meals too were excellent: evening meals at a local restaurant or prepared with skill by Sue, healthy sandwiches/rolls for lunch and a good variety in continental breakfasts. They were always healthy and readied us for the day’s (or next day’s) adventure. We couldn’t find a single highlight of the tour as there was something special each day and it would be an injustice to rank them.

A full and varied tour of the South Island in all its beauty and splendour was experienced with Pure Trails. The leaders were very friendly and did everything they could to ensure everyone was happy with each day's tour. The leaders' commentary in our journeying was enjoyable as they had a good knowledge of the flora and fauna, geology and history of each area we passed through. The accommodation arranged for us was first class throughout. None of us at the end of the tour could find fault with anything on our holiday so that is why Pure Trails deserves 10/10.

Pure Trails was fantastic from start to finish. Great food, bikes, historic accommodation and side trips. Our guide Hillary knew many interesting people and took us on several trips to view off the track towns. No hesitation in booking again. A very relaxing holiday. Paul

We cycled the Canterbury Back Country tour...was our first visit to NZ and first tour with PureTrails, was excellent:

very knowledgeable tour guide
excellent organisation of rides meals etc.
great accommodation in remote places e.g. Glenfalloch Station
great way to experience high country e.g. Erewhon Station
good balance of riding challenges & rest
good quality mountain bikes
good with small group of friends
gravel road surfaces were more stoney than expected

Very fortunate to have good weather and see fresh snow on mountains, spectacular! First holiday have come home fitter than when we left.

We biked the West Coast with Pure Trails had a great time. Accommodation and Food was great. Tour guides wonderful and the scenery was amazing. Best part was biking down from the Denniston mines 600 metres above sea level. This is our 3rd trip with Pure Trails we have also done McKenzie Country and Molesworth and they have all have been very worth while trips. Bring it on for next year which one to pick

After many attempts to do the Otago Rail Trail independently with friends, and getting nowhere, I decided that 2012 was the year to do the Trail. I chose PureTrails NZ after researching other tours. It quickly stood out to me as the best group to travel with, and I have never regretted my decision from my initial contact to make my booking. Loved every minute of the Trail and it exceeded my expectations. PureTrails gave value for money, and the people I travelled with were great fun and easy to get on with. Autumn colours were spectacular along with the surrounding scenery. John, our guide, was helpful with a good sense of fun, knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent as was the accommodation. Loved staying at Dunstan House in Clyde - a real treat. Could not fault anything, even the weather, and enjoyed myself totally thanks to PureTrails and their excellent arrangements in all departments.

My partner and I cycled the Otago Rail Trail with Puretrails. They organised everything for us ( including our vegetarian meals)! Our accomodation, company, food and tour guide were all superb. We had a wonderful time on excellent bikes supplied by the company. The tiny isolated towns in Central South Island are a delight to visit and the scenery is too. We are New Zealanders and could have organised our own trip quite easily but decided to have it all done for us. You need to train a bit if you are not a cyclist but we only did a few hours per week for a couple of months and that was adequate. Thioroughly recommend this tour company and the rail trail experience.

The degree of support was well targeted to the participants needs for this bike tour of the Central Otago Rail Trail. Great side-activities (curling, farm tour etc), very comfortable accommodation, great food. Knowledgeable and helpful guide, very good pre/post tour administration/organisation. We do not hesitate to recommend this Company.

Thank you Pure Trails for an experience in the Mackenzie Basin which exceeded our greatest expectations. The weather, food, accommodation and equipment was faultless and nothing was a bother to the guides. Will certainly look forward to another trip with this excellent organisation.
