We operate supported cycling tours in the beautiful South Island, including the Otago Rail Trail. Our tours are well researched, meticulously planned, and expertly led by our team of dedicated guides. We aim to provide exceptional hassle free tours.

We prefer to visit places far from the bustling tourist scene – places that are beautiful, sometimes remote, usually peaceful, and more often than not enhanced by the local communities that host us.

Our supported bike tours are on dedicated cycle trails, or on quiet rural country roads in areas of the country that offer stunning scenery and historical interest. We provide full vehicle support, so that those who do not wish to cycle the full distances may hop on and off as desired. Our tour packages include all transport and dedicated guides, accommodation, and most meals. We use good quality accommodation based on double/twinshare rooms (mostly with en-suite facilities), and catering is wholesome and plentiful. Current tour options include:

Otago Rail Trail
Alps 2 Ocean Trail
West Coast Wilderness Trail
Around the Mountains Trail
Queenstown Lakes Trail
Roxburgh Gorge Trail
West Coast Wilderness Trail
Wild West Coast Trail
Marlborough Wine Trail
Tasman Great Taste Trail
Canterbury Backcountry Trail

Everything about this trip was superb!! Biking was diverse and challenging around spectacular scenery. Accommodation and food were very good. I would recommend this experience to everyone. I definitely became much more confident in my riding so thank you for that. PureTrails is well organized and our guide was fantastic. My Kiwi friends were the icing to the cake. Wonderful people!!

My wife and I rode two of their tours in quick succession, the Tasman Taste and the Hurunui and really enjoyed ourselves. (Especially going downhill, adds my wife.) Amazingly, Hilary and colleagues did so much meticulous research into their routes that they were very often flat or down hill. This reflects that many of the tours are ideal for older cyclists who want to enjoy the wonderful scenery as much as been first up the mountain.
I really enjoyed the Hurunui Tour, especially the very wet day riding the track that follows the Clarence River through Molesworth Station country. We were very wet and muddy at the end of it but all the hotels were excellent with welcome hot water!
The penultimate day was a long descent to Kaikoura, when we were fit enough not to notice the climbs and could appreciate the fantastic countryside.
We plan to come back and do some more when we can, having made such good friends with our cycling "team" and with our guides and drivers.
Highly recommended.

PureTrails New Zealand responds:

Hi Ian & Chrissie, Thanks so much for your review. It was a real pleasure to join in on the Hurunui trip with you both and enjoy the cycling also (even the fun muddy day at Molesworth!) John W was surprised and amazed to see you on Rabbit Island again after Christmas, enjoying that section of trail a second time around! Cheers, Hilary

A memorable tour with well thought out daily rides and other activities. It was a fun group with our excellent guide John and support from Hilary. We saw such a good variety of the countryside, were so well fed and accommodated along the way. Highly recommended.

We did a supported Alps to Ocean Ride in a small group. The tour was incredibly well organised, accommodation was good and our guide, John, was outstanding. I would definitely consider using this company again and recommend it to others. We had fun!

We did the Hurunui ride with 8 riders over 5 days. The tour was excellent with good accommodation and good food. The ride is a mixture of cycling and visiting assorted attractions and vineyards along the way. It would not be a challenge for a serious cyclist however the two strong serious cyclists in our group very much enjoyed the experience. There was occasional gravel on the ride which needs great respect as even experienced cyclists can come to grief on such a surface. Highly recommended and we hope to do another of PureTrail's trips. Peter, Sydney

Hi Peter, Thanks for your review - great to hear you all enjoyed the trip. Cheers Hilary

An excellent experience; two relatively unfit mid-60s cyclists (with no recent experience), in a group of 13 friends and colleagues, we had a great time. Well planned; knowledgeable, friendly guide; top accommodation, high quality bikes, good food, well-paced, etc. Not a challenge for serous cycluts, but an excellent experience for mere mortals and ordinary people. If you don't enjoy this trip, it's your own fault.

PureTrails New Zealand responds:

Hi David, It's great to see you enjoyed the Otago Rail Trail tour so much! Cheers Hilary

10 from Australia had a marvellous 5 days with PureTrails.
While we traversed gravel paths, something we are not familiar with here, we grumbled a bit but got soon accepted them for what they are. PureTrails is an excellent team of professionals. Johns care, commentary and driving skills were comforting; we never felt worried. The food on the Central Otago Rail ride was constant, plentiful and excellent. The bed rooms were brilliant - in all it was much more than we expected. We will probably do another PureTrail ride one day.

PureTrails New Zealand responds:

Hi Denise,
Thanks so much for your comments - we look forward to hosting you on another cycle trail one day. Cheers Hilary

The Southern Lakes and Mountains Explorer was a wonderful tour, combining a diverse range of sceneries and experiences. The guides were knowledgeable and personable, helping to ensure a very relaxed and comfortable group. All our accommodation had been carefully selected to include not only different styles, but wonderful surroundings and outlooks. Our meals too, were all excellent. It was exactly the sort of holiday I wanted - well planned, relaxed, quality food and experiences, no glitches - but which clearly requires a lot of research, planning and local knowledge to pull off effectively. Well done PureTrails!

We had always thought of cycling the Otago Rail Trail and in October 2013 a number of circumstances came together to make it possible. We are well past the age where cycling with backpack and camping is attractive and on the advice of some New Zealand friends we opted to travel with Pure Trails. I must admit that I was a bit miffed to read in the small print that bike hire was extra (on a cycling trip?) but in the end went along with it. It turned out that our party of four, Granddad, Grandma, mother and grandson, were the only people on the first trip. We had brand new bikes, a first class guide, John W., and a large 10-seater van to travel in with plenty of room to stow all our gear. From the early morning Wednesday pick up at our hotel in Christchurch to the drop off at Christchurch airport on Sunday evening the whole time was a wonderful experience and one we cannot recommend highly enough. The games we had taken to keep the 10 year old occupied in the evenings were never used and every waking moment was taken up with all sorts of activities. After cycling until three or four o’clock, John W. would whisk us away in the van to meet interesting people and/or visit local sights. After dinner bed seemed very attractive, especially with the generally early morning starts! We are not going to describe the trip in detail as our advice is to go and do it. The accommodation was splendid, the meals were superb – in fact the one reservation I had on the whole trip was that there was generally too much food available – and for once the weather was on our side. Apart from the first morning’s mist we had mainly sunny days and although it was very early spring we did cycle in T-shirts on occasions. We cannot praise Pure Trails enough – the whole trip had been carefully thought out and the plans were reasonably flexible – our final comment is that if you want to cycle the Rail Trail in relative comfort pick Pure Trails – they really do know what they are doing.

PureTrails New Zealand responds:

John... it was a pleasure to host your family on the Trail. All the best Hilary (& John)

Southern Mountains and Lakes (Feb 2013)
What a fantastic experience – a variety of dramatic and pleasant scenery, excellent range of accommodation, delicious high quality meals (both from the hands of our wonderful guides Sue and Chris, and at a variety of restaurants), great company and informative commentary. Our guides Sue and Chris were excellent in that role but also were great company, with good senses of humour. The tour provided a balance between scenic views whilst travelling on the bus, and great walking in a range of terrains/environments - mountains, lakes, forests etc – coupled with unique fauna experiences, including kiwi, penguins and a wide range of native birds. A photographer’s paradise! The organisation was top notch – everything ran smoothly. A thoroughly recommendable experience: not glitz, just good travel and walking in a friendly environment.

Northern Beaches and Sounds (Mar2013)
This company’s reputation remains superb in our minds after another wonderful experience. As usual everything ran to schedule under the careful watch of our guide Sue. There was a wide range of terrains on offer – beaches, forests, lakes, mountains etc – all with interesting commentary from Sue. The walking was on good tracks, and to a degree away from the madding crowd, so we were usually on our own to enjoy both the spectacular and the sedate elements of the scenery on offer. Another photographer’s paradise! Accommodation was varied, including the interesting San Souci at Golden Bay, but always of a high standard. Meals too were excellent: evening meals at a local restaurant or prepared with skill by Sue, healthy sandwiches/rolls for lunch and a good variety in continental breakfasts. They were always healthy and readied us for the day’s (or next day’s) adventure. We couldn’t find a single highlight of the tour as there was something special each day and it would be an injustice to rank them.

A full and varied tour of the South Island in all its beauty and splendour was experienced with Pure Trails. The leaders were very friendly and did everything they could to ensure everyone was happy with each day's tour. The leaders' commentary in our journeying was enjoyable as they had a good knowledge of the flora and fauna, geology and history of each area we passed through. The accommodation arranged for us was first class throughout. None of us at the end of the tour could find fault with anything on our holiday so that is why Pure Trails deserves 10/10.

PureTrails New Zealand responds:

Hi Graham, thanks for your lovely feedback. We hope to see you back in NZ one day so we can show you more of our little piece of paradise! Cheers, Hilary
