If there's one place in Aotearoa that every visitor should make time for, it's this one. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is where the story of this country really begins, and the site does a genuinely good job of telling it. Two solid museums, beautifully kept grounds, and a ceremonial waka that you have to see in person to appreciate the scale of.
The guided tours are consistently praised across hundreds of visits, and the cultural performance is the highlight for most people. It's held inside the meeting house which keeps numbers intimate, and that makes a real difference. If you can stretch to the Hāngi and Concert package, do it. The food is good and the whole evening experience lands differently than just a daytime visit. Promo code RANKERS gets you 10% off, which is a handy saving given this is a full half-day (at least) experience.
A few people over the years have flagged the price as a stretch without a discount, and honestly I get that. But the depth of what's here earns it. Go in with some curiosity about NZ history and you'll leave with a much clearer picture of why things are the way they are in this country.
The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is New Zealand's most important historic site and are an absolute must-do when you are in the Bay of Islands - the grounds are rich in history and stories of the momentous events that have shaped our nation.
