This short walk is a wonderful mixture of beach and forest in close proximity. The beach is pristine and wild, the forest mature and magnificent.
In Papatowai head down Alexandra Street to Picnic Point parking area at the mouth of Tahakopa River. There are picnic benches and toilets nearby.
Follow the beach around the point, passing the detritus of bull kelp and tuatua shells. The views east retreat to the headland of Long Point and a misty sea haze rises to mask the forest fringing the beach of Tahakopa Bay.
After 15 minutes the track starts to climb gently through forest, shortly passing the junction with Kings Rock Walk. Keep right and continue through mature podocarp forest, with interpretation panels pointing out prominent species. The track exits 300 metres above the parking area.
