Tongariro National Park had dual heritage status, not just for the natural stuff but also because of the huge cultural significance of this area. There are historical sites dotted around the place such as Te Porere; there is a lot of information to be found about the local legends at visitors centres. Immerse yourself

Our decision to go rafting on our holiday was pretty spontaneous, but with only 1 days notice our party of three was booked in.

We rafted with an experienced guide (Ryan) and a trainee (Andy), both of whom were great fun.

The gear provided was in reasonable condition and kept our heads safe and bodies warm.

I thought the cost of the photo CD ($30) was a bit rich, but the rafting experience itself was excellent value. Oh, and the sandwiches served when we got back were delicious!!

Thanks folks, likely to be back next year with another group of friends!

I was very fortunate that the other adventurers that were supposed to accompany Ryan and myself on the Tongariro River rafting experience did not show, so I got the royal treatment. Ryan was funny, informative and friendly and an extremely experienced rafter. I felt completely safe and even slipped into the water for a dip at Ryan's suggestion in a quieter part of the river. The scenery was amazing and Ryan told me a lot about the rock formations and the wildlife in the area. I had told Ryan that I was hearing impaired and could not wear my hearing aids on the river and he was loud and clear for the whole thirteen and half km and through 64 rapids. Thanks Ryan! I had an awesome time!

Choose to raft the Tongariro River in Turangi with Tongariro River Rafting and you may be one of the last people on earth to clap eyes on the New Zealand native blue duck (whio).
We were among the lucky ones to get close to one of these small whistling birds on a picture-perfect January day during a family float tour of the river.
Tongariro River Rafting guide Mike Dally grew up exploring the Tongariro River and took his sense of adventure with him into a career in the outdoors three years ago.
His love of the job is obvious.
As soon as we make it through the first set of rapids downstream from Blue Pool, Dally calls a casual greeting from the back of the raft.
“Welcome to my office.”
We are joined by a family of five from Noumea, New Caledonia for the morning trip.
Three of the four boys are in awe and raptures as white water grade two rapids usher the boat downriver.
The team soon rallies with multi-lingual whoops and shouts after a quick paddling lesson.
Dally’s knowledge of the Tongariro River, world famous for its rainbow trout fishing, kayaking, rafting, camping, walking, and mountain biking opportunities, is personal and scientific.
The whio we see early on in the trip near the Poutu intake belongs to a species 25 times more endangered than the kiwi.
The New Zealand government’s Department of Conservation awarded Tongariro River Rafting a special accolade in 2009 for its work protecting the whitewater habitat of the whio.
It deserves many more accolades from happy rafters, from child novices to experienced locals, this year.
In a word: terrific.

As a staff christmas activity, this was the bomb. Garth and his team looked after us the whole way so that those who may have worried about the level of the trip were absolutely cruisy with the whole day. The photos show everybody grinning for joy not terror. Cheers to everyone at TRR who gave us such a fantastic day.

These guys let me join in after I was left waiting at a pickup point by another company and it couldn't have turned out better. If there is a more experienced and safety concious group of individuals that were hell bent on you having a brilliant time, then I've yet to meet them in my forty years of holiday madness and thrill seeking. Thanks guys awesome job, I'll be sure to recommend you to our guests and local groups.

I am an experienced white water rafter and took my daughter (who is an adult - in her 20's) on her first white water trip. The trip was fun and exciting for both of us. The company and guides made it safe and our guide increased the fun with his stories and confidence. My daughter now hungers for more white water and I will be back (with my son) for some class 5 water - hopefully with the same company.

This was our first whitewater rafting trip and it was awesome.

The staff were all friendly and welcoming, our guides were Ryan and Sam and they were professional, funny and welcoming.

The rafting experience was amazing, the river stunning and the rapids fun.

The fact we were given a waterproof camera to take photos and video on the trip was also really good and made the $30 cost for photos well worth it.

This trip was top of the many highlights of our NZ honeymoon.

We had an awesome time on the Grade 2 "family float" on the weekend. Our tour guide was Luke, very friendly and helpful and made it so much fun. It was our first time rafting with our 7 and 9 year old children and it was fantastic. We travelled 8 klm's down the most beautiful river and we had a fantastic time.

Will definately go again next time we are travelling through. We felt completely safe the whole time! Thanks so much guys!

We just called them a day beforehand and the next morning at 9.00am we were on our way to start the 2 1/2 hour White Water Rafting trip. We had a great experience and a lot of fun - beautiful scenery and great rapids.

Mike (Mad Dog) and Mike2 were very great and made this trip perfect with their humor and skills.

Tip: At every Info-Point you can find a little free magazine, from the publisher "Jasons", for Spring 2011 "What"s On Rotorua". They put some Vouchers in it and one is to get the photo cd (which would cost $30) for free. ;)
