Two Walks, Two Very Different Days

There are really two walks worth knowing about in Kaikoura, and they suit different moods entirely. The Peninsula Walkway is my pick for most people. You can do as much or as little of it as you like, and the whole way round you're basically walking through a seal colony. Half the time you'll smell them before you spot them, and what looks like a lump of driftwood on the beach almost certainly isn't.

For the Keen Ones

Mt Fyffe Walkway is the other one, and it's a proper slog. Steep, no shortcuts, but the view at the top is the best in the region by a long stretch. Mountains behind you, Pacific Ocean in front. Only go on a clear day, and get up early if you can. It earns its reputation.
