The Coastal Track is the Big One, But Don't Stop There

Abel Tasman's coastal track is the obvious headline, and for good reason. The stretch from Marahau north through Onetahuti and up to Totaranui gives you golden beaches, bush-covered headlands, and tidal crossings that keep things interesting. My pick for a single day is the Full Park Cruise with a walk back from Awaroa - grab a coffee at the lodge, then stroll south to meet the boat at Onetahuti. Easy logistics, great variety. For the quietest walking, head north of Totaranui to Anapai Bay and Mutton Cove. Harder to get to, which means fewer people.

Golden Bay Has Its Own Thing Going On

Golden Bay rewards walkers who come with a bit of flexibility. Wharariki Beach is the standout - caves, arches, and seal pups in rock pools - but pick a low-wind, low-tide day or it can be a bit of a mission just to stay upright. If you have time on Takaka Hill, the Harwoods Hole track is an easy walk into an impressive natural amphitheatre, and the side trip to Gorge Creek lookout is worth every step. For something smaller and gentle, The Grove is a quick stroll through nikau palms and twisted rata that suits literally any age.

The Stops En Route Are Underrated

Don't overlook the walking on the way in. Pelorus Bridge on the drive from Marlborough has an easy loop track with a swing bridge that's genuinely fun, and the swimming holes nearby are top notch. The Riwaka Resurgence track near Motueka is short but has a real presence to it - sacred springs with insane clarity. And if you're at Kaiteriteri, the walk up to Kaka Pa Point is a quick leg-stretch with genuinely excellent views.
