Where the History Lives
The best heritage atmosphere in the region is in
Nelson itself. The area around
the Cathedral and South Street is where you feel the city's age most clearly. South Street in particular is one of those spots that just feels genuinely old in a way that doesn't try too hard.
Older Than That
Head out to Golden Bay and you're stepping into a different kind of history altogether. Langfords Store in Takaka is worth a look. It's one of those old-school general stores that feels frozen in time. My number one postcard sending spot, honestly.
Even Older
Out at Kaka Pa Point near the Abel Tasman, there's a short walk up to an old Maori pa site. Stand there and you immediately get why it was chosen. The sightlines are extraordinary. It's a good reminder that the history here goes a lot further back than European settlement.
