Natural Attractions

The Peaks Are the Thing

The standout natural attractions here are the two big hikes. Roys Peak gets all the algorithm love and yes, the views are genuinely nuts, but it's become a conga line on a good day with potentially an hour's wait just to get your photo. My preference is Isthmus Peak over at Lake Hawea, a solid grunt with seriously good views and maybe a tenth of the people. Both are exposed with zero shade, so the early start isn't optional, it's the whole strategy. I'm talking 3 or 4am for Roys if you can manage it.

The One That's Escaped the Algorithm

If you want something quieter again, the drive into Matukituki Valley to the Rob Roy Glacier track is a different beast entirely. The access road is long, winding, and can be undrivable after rain, which is exactly why it hasn't been swallowed up by the tourist machine yet. The whole day, drive included, is worth every minute. Larger motorhomes probably won't make it in, but if you're in a campervan and up for it, the reward is real. Between the peaks and this valley, the Wanaka Region punches well above its weight for scenery you actually have to work for.

While you're based around the lake, the drive along Lake Hawea is worth doing slowly. There's a section where the road climbs high above the water and the views open right up. Five minutes stopped at the side of the road, and it's one of those moments that just lands.
