South Island ▷ Nelson Region ▷
The Nelson region is genuinely one of the better spots in NZ to do something aerial, mostly because of what's underneath you. Abel Tasman from the air is something else - golden beaches, aqua water, the whole coastline stretching from Kaikoura all the way to Farewell Spit on a clear day. Tandem hang gliding over there is the one I'd point people towards. You get aero-towed to altitude and then just... float over all of it. No experience needed.
If skydiving is your thing, Motueka is where to do it. Over 100 reviews and consistently well-rated - the view on the way down is the Abel Tasman coastline, which is a pretty decent backdrop for your first freefall. Worth knowing there's a promo code RANKERS for 10% off the skydive, which takes a decent chunk off the price. For something a bit more niche, there's also a stunt plane option out of the region where you actually get to pilot a Pitts Special yourself. That one's for people who want to come home with a slightly different story.
