South Island ▷ Coastal Otago ▷
The big lesson in Coastal Otago is simple: get off State Highway 1. The coastline between Dunedin and Oamaru is where the good stuff hides, and it rewards people who take their time. The Otago Peninsula Scenic Drive out to the heads is a great journey in itself, especially the last stretch where the road gets narrow and quirky. Doctors Point, Sandfly Bay, Allans Beach - all raw and largely uncrowded, and often with seals just hanging around like they own the place.
Promo code RANKERS - good deal done!
Katiki Point near Moeraki is worth the detour on its own. It's home to around 50 breeding pairs of Hoiho (Yellow-eyed Penguin), which is a huge chunk of the world's remaining population. Arrive between 4 and 5:30pm and you've got a genuine chance of watching them come ashore. Back on the peninsula, the only mainland Northern Royal Albatross colony in the world sits at the far end - you can often spot them for free from the carpark on a windy day, though the guided albatross experience gets you closer to where the chicks are raised (promo code RANKERS saves 10%). For Yellow-eyed penguins on the peninsula itself, a guided wildlife tour is now really your best shot - public spots don't cut it anymore. Same RANKERS code works there too.
The Moeraki Boulders are worth a look, though I'd go early before the tour buses arrive. They're geologically curious things - spherical, scattered along the beach, and honestly a bit hard to explain. And if you're passing through Dunno's, the Dunedin Botanic Gardens are a genuinely peaceful stop with native birds and over 6,800 plant species. Easy parking, close to the highway, and the parrots in the aviary are keen for a chat.
