South Island ▷ Coastal Otago ▷
Coastal Otago is genuinely one of the best places in the world to see rare penguins in the wild, but you have to play it smart. For Yellow-eyed penguins on the Otago Peninsula, don't let old internet posts give you false hope - the birds now cross private land, so a guided tour is your best bet for a real sighting. Clearwater Wildlife Tours is the top pick for that, pricier but worth it. There's also Penguin Place if you want a different option, and both take promo code RANKERS for 10% off at checkout. Down at Moeraki, Katiki Point is a different story - just turn up between 4pm and 5:30pm and you've got a solid chance of seeing them come ashore for free. This is where 50 of the world's remaining 200-odd breeding pairs live, alongside a massive fur seal colony. It's a pretty special spot.
Promo code RANKERS - good deal done!
The Otago Peninsula has more going on than just penguins. The only mainland Northern Royal Albatross colony in the world sits at the far tip, and on a windy day you can often spot them from the carpark at no cost. The Royal Albatross Centre tour gets you closer to the chicks and gives good context - RANKERS knocks 10% off that too. If you want an ocean perspective on the whole thing, the Monarch Wildlife Cruise is good value and covers seals and birds from the water - same promo code applies. Up north of Dunedin, Orokonui Ecosanctuary is worth the detour for Takahe and Tuatara, two of NZ's great wildlife stories in one predator-proof fence.
And then there's Oamaru, where Little Blue Penguins come ashore en masse after dark. The paid colony experience is a bit on the touristy side - worth checking if tour buses are booked in before you go. Alternatively, grab a seat in your campervan along the foreshore at dusk and just watch what happens. Drive carefully though, the penguins cross the road and they don't look both ways.
