Travelling with a campervan across New Zealand is a quite unique experience however not the most economically effective one.

We were nicely surprised with DoC campgrounds, the locations are stunning the facilities are basics (toilet and cold showers) but this makes the unique camping feeling. The campsites that we stayed at were not too busy and felt really close to nature compared to the commercial campgrounds (that were also very good). Matai bay was our favourite place with calm water (like a large pool) and nice views.
