Whangarei TOP 10 Holiday Park
We stopped over at this top 10 holiday park to split up the drive from the north as the free sites available south of Cape Reinga weren't great.
We really enjoyed the site, a little pricey ($44 for 2 adults in a large camper for one night), but got free internet (100mb) and managed to do a couple of washes ($4 per wash, $3 per dry). Each campervan spot is concrete, with electricity and a fresh water tap. Showers were lovely, nice and clean and hot! Worth it for a comfortable night in the camper.

Raetea North Side Campsite
We stayed here at the end of May and didn't manage to get there until dark.
It was a VERY difficult place to find. You have to take a hidden turning just past the bridge. We drove in and parked but couldn't see much, it wasn't until the morning that we (and all the other campers) realised we were completely stuck! The ground can't handle even a small amount of rain, the mud is thick and there is only one "safe" spot on shorter grass. There is no phone signal available here and it's quite a walk to find help. Yes, the views are amazing and it's off the beaten track, which is why I've given it 3 stars, but there is nothing here and you have to keep your fingers crossed it doesn't rain!!

Tapotupotu Campsite
We loved this place.
$6 per night, per adult. Doc maintained site with clean cold outdoor showers, one compost toilet block and one flushing toilet block. Plenty of taps available for washing pots etc. There is plenty of room to park your van and there are always plenty of campers here, which makes for a great atmosphere. The campsite is quite far (30-40 min drive) from the nearest shop/gas station, so make sure you have plenty of supplies and fuel and you'll be fine. The views are second to none and there are plenty of coastal and bush walks to do while you're here. This was our fave place to camp and we did both north & south islands. Can't wait to get back here next year!! Would highly recommend.
