From Takaka hill entrance at Canaan rd its 5 km/ 200 m uphill to the saddle, highest point.
(might hitch a lift with mountain bikers cars). Its downhill from there onwards. 65 km roundtrip/ 800 height difference. DOC camp (Canaan camp) at the end of road for 6.-pp. Walk to Howards Hole one of the best forrest walks.
