We went here and see the parking lot and public toilets but could find no signage indicating the freedom camping.
So, rather than chance it, we went elsewhere.

Far exceeded pur expectations!
Well maintained.
Nice kitchen and lounge.
Large screen TV.
Group BBQ area with nice fireplace.
Short stroll to the beach.
Would definetely stay here again.

Catchpool Valley Campsite
Beautiful location.
Shared the Totara Zone with Manawatu Collegegroup, 20+ tents. Unexpected but ok. Only one pit toilet stall open so lots of waiting or a bit of a hike to the next one.
Hot showers were not working.
LPG hoses, but no tank.
Disappointing for a winter outing. Opted to not brave the cold water.
