Information

Thousand Acres Camping Ground

Walking accessed campsite in the Hunua Ranges

The Thousand Acres campsite is accessed off the Mangatangi Ridge track, a steep and difficult track recommended for experienced trampers only.
The campsite is a simple shelter arrangement with a dirt floor, roof-collected water and a long drop toilet.
The Hunua Ranges are handy to Auckland yet afford a convincing feeling of isolation, stunning views and some great mountain biking tracks.

  • As remote camp sites go, small, but pretty good, given it has a shelter, a bench, and place to prepare your food.

Seeing a big rat is a bit of a surprise for NZ.

  • This campsite has a small shed-like shelter, tables, long drop toilet, and nearby stream as its water source.

There is space to comfortably fit 5-6 tents on what is unfortunately a sloped campsite. Nonetheless, not a bad spot to spend the night if you are hiking in the eastern side of the Hunua ranges.
